I've understood that the situation in Nepal has been better for a time but am I wrong...? The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland or The Embassy of Finland in Nepal (both in Finnish only, sorry) don't advise against road travel to/in Nepal even though they state that strikes, demonstrations, and the like are possible in the cities and in the south (Terai) in particular (and can make travel difficult). I think there are still many tourists travelling the roads between India and Nepal - I may be wrong - but should I really stop even considering anything else but a return flight to Kathmandu (from Delhi)?

Toisaalta vieraiden kielten poistaminen tältä palstalta on yksi esimerkki miten maapalloa tasapäistetään. Eri kulttuurit ja kielet ovat maailman rikkaus ja ihminen pystyy selvimmin ilmaisemaan asiansa juuri omalla kielellään eikä vieraalla kuten mun tapauksessa vasta neljännellä opitulla.

Muuten lainasin äsken yksinaisen planeetan tappurapuulle sun listaa 90 päivän oleskeluluvan ja 5 vuoden viismin maista. siihen ei tullutkaan merkintää lainasta joten suo anteeksi tuo kirjallinen varkaus.

Varma,

Much as I find your language aesthetically pleasing, I have to inform you that English is the language of this board, and posts in any further post in any other language will be removed.

We have many users to whom English is not a first language.

You are most welcome to use the Private Message system to communicate with other members in any language you wish.

It looks like I have to find in this less and less diversity world first "the private message system". where is it?

I guess you've found it now? It's in several places; probably under "Quick Links" yes, or you can click on a member's name in their posts (their profile to the left) and find the option "send a private message to..." there. It's described in more detail in this site's FAQ.

The language thing is really very simple: The moderators have not the time or inclination to check if foreign-language posts aren't advocating the use of Viagra or the massacring of the Polar bear, and besides such posts won't be of any interest to all but a very few members & hence present a break in continuity.

Thank you & enjoy the board. You can use a translator like Babelfish to read or translate your posts before posting. Note that the results are often a little, eh, comical, so a minimum of effort in the English language will be required. People here will do their best to understand and answer you though, or they'll ask again if they need to.

Also in that box at the very top right of the page that says 'Welcome Varma' --- you'll see a link to Private Messages there.

Of course you are entitled to not answer personal questions --- but, are you of Indian origin?

It potentially removes all those visa hassles if you go for PIO or OCI.

It's a long road trip to Kathmandu. If for example, u are comfortable with a 6 hour stop in the middle of nowhere for any reason (road closure due to landslide - it is monsoon u know, roadblock by agitators, breakdown of vehicle), then go ahead by all means. What if the halt is for 12 hours? Let me point out that all of the above have happened at one time or another in the last year, but mostly does not make the news. It is not my habit to go on flights of fancy - I meet Nepalis often enuff in Muss and this is what I hear from them. If u do get stuck (not guaranteed of course) be advised that u won't be getting any special treatment, u'll have to sit it out with the others. I wudn't undertake a road-trip in Nepal as an Indian in the present circs, I certainly won't be recommending it to someone from a 3rd country, espesh not if travelling alone.
On the other hand it cud be the adventure of a lifetime - all depends on if u feel up to it. Do u?

The political scenario in Nepal has totally been changed in the recent years. There has been a lot of political upheavals now a days. Please take the instructions seriously.

Rest assured that I've searched for instructions/advice, read them, and taken them seriously but as I wrote earlier, the Embassy and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs do not advise against road/bus travel. I read Lonely Planet yesterday, and LP advises against bus travel in Nepal - "keep it to the minimum" - not only because of the Maoists but because of road conditions. So that's why I have IndiaMike. I'm seeking for your advice - and I thank you for it; I've been/I am confused, really. A return flight to Kathmandu it is then..?

Is the situation in Colombo/Sri Lanka (for example) better? Bangladesh? The recent floods? It is easy/fast to get a visa to these countries in Delhi? Or should I fly to Male/the Maldives, ... mmm.... the Maldives....

Nepal News

Not a good sign if it actually happens:

We will quit govt if status-quo continues: Prachanda

Not really connected, but at least the Indian govt is being smart by trying to keep everyone on-side:

Senior Indian official calls on Nepal PM
Indian official meets Nepal's Maoist chief Prachanda

You do not have to use this language: you do not have to use this site!

If you choose to do so, it would be appreciated if you stopped grumbling about something that thousands of other members are quite happy to live with.

Is anything stopping you using the PM (Private Message) system?

Though you should be aware that many members find it arduous answering questions from people who could just as easily post them on the site.

If you don't like it here you are most welcome to spend your online time elsewhere.

We are also mighty puzzled by your use of the word kuli. Who are you talking about, and why? Not sure that anyone has particularly liked being called a coolie --- at least not for the past 60 years.

Nepal - the bus ride to Banbasa/Mahendranagar is still the cheapest workable option (albeit an uncomfortable one), if it's just for regaining entry to India. But for a proper visit, flight to KTM it is, keeping an eye on the political situation of course. Winter will be cold, but nothing like the sight of Sagarmatha (Everest) from Nagarkot on a clear day , or with a great deal of luck - from the air!
SL - only practical way of entry - fly to Colombo. Nothing to worry about.
BD - only practical way of entry - fly to Dhaka. Nothing to worry about. Flood waters are a monsoon thing, not a year-round thing. Dec/Jan is actually the best time in BD.
Maldives - great place, but expensive (deliberately) - certainly most Indians and budget travellers think so.

Ah, dinero... Me no have very many dinero. (I spent enough on visiting a friend in Taiwan this summer already.) And visiting the Maldives requires dinero, and I think a visit to the Maldives might be a bit of a waste of dinero without Mr. ploink...

I love to dream about the Maldives, though - who would've guessed... <getting over it>

You do not need a visa for Colombo. The first month you get free on entry. Also there are inexpensive flights with Air-India-Express, Chennai to Colombo
