Well, they have every power anyway. I don't know about right, but that's a tricky word.

Unless they have signed it away in any particular treaty with any particular country or group of countries, certainly they have the right!

Do you not say who can and can't enter your house?

India's Visa policy is being tightened up --- a trend which is not going to be popular among many IM members and visitors to India.

Well Nick, it depends on how you define house. The world is a house by one definition is it not? Anyway, ideally I'd like a John Lennon world with no borders, but I accept that this is not very realistic. It's just that the word "right" has sticky connotations with me. We tend to take it for granted that rights are somehow measured against some objective standard, but the word is really quite subjective. But don't mind me. Just careless musings of a man on his way to India today...

Sorry for the disruption.

Ok- first of all, im originally from Italy and living in the Netherlands almost 10 years (my passport is italian one)- here's the question...

After reading this thread i've called the indian embassy in Den Haag and i asked if it was true that now i can obtain only 3 months tourist visa...

The lady who answered the phone was suprised of my request, she says she never heard of it, she asked (..funny..) where did i get this info and she told me she would have check it out and please call back in a week...

I didnt call yet, will probably do it next week, but i was wondering if anybody out here knows precisely what's going on...

Im planning to go back to India this coming autumn, and would gladly stay for (..at least..) 6 months... in a roll..

.
(In December the same embassy had said to my friend tht 6months stay will still be possible in the future, though it is not - i.e. given wrong information.)

So, when was your 180 days -visa issued?

And how about anybody having a tourist visa issued this year, what does it say - gallup?
Mine was issued in December by the HCI London and it said the following:-

Stamped in green ink near the special endorsement section ''stay during each visit shall not exceed 180days''

How long is the Italian visa valid?

There was some stuff about issuing a five-year visa for some countries, the downside was the stay was to be reduced to 90 days.

Hi! At the italian consulate in Milan they told me only 3 months visas are issued. At the embassy in Rome they told me it depends on the consul,so... but on their website they still claim that they are giving 6 months and 1 year visas, which it it seems not to be the case anymore.

Just called the indian embassy in Den Haag - the lady confirm that they are still giving 6 months tourist visa (also for italian passport holders).. and she says "Dont listen to rumors please!"... ..omg... it's really like this.. the indian confusion (yes-no-left-right..) starts before to land over there...

I think i will only know for sure when i'll get that stamp on the passport...

This was most European countries ,except the UK and also the US because of terrorism. They are endorsed 180 days. Terrorism??? I'm more concerned about the Terrorist Vehicles here. Oh! sorry , I misread the sign on the taxi, it said TOURIST Vehicle.

The 90-day limit for tourist visas was a surprise to me - or a shock! I checked with the Embassy of India in Helsinki (Finland) - and, no, nowhere on their web page can I find the information that tourist visas now have a 90-day limit. They didn't have a limit, the last time I checked, and the Embassy told me that the limit is quite new.

Any kind of tourist visa (6-month, 1-year, ... single entry, multiple entry,...) allows me to be in India for a 90-day period only. On the 90th day at the latest, I have to exit India. The 90-day period begins when I arrive in India. (The time period of the visa - 180 days/6 months - does begin when it's issued, not when I arrive.) I can re-enter India on the same day as I exit (no need to renew, extend, ... the tourist visa; need to cross and recross the border only).

The "90-day rule" doesn't only apply to Finnish citizens in India (on a tourist visa); it also applies to others - to whom, I don't know, I didn't ask them to list the others. The "90-day rule" also applies to Indians who are in the EU with a tourist visa. So the "90-day rule" might apply to all EU nationals? I'm not certain. In one of the other Visa threads SANJAY_DEL wrote that:

Government of India has introduced a long term tourist visa with multiple entry for nationals of 18 countries
The countries which come under the new visa norms include france, germany, luxembourg, neth erlands, belgium, finland, spain, switzerland, norway, iceland, new zeland , japan , south korea , argentina, brazil, chile, mexico and vietnam
''the visa will have a five year validity with stipulation that continuous stay in India on each visit shall not exceed 90 days''

Well, at least for Finnish nationals, the limit applies to any kind of tourist visa. I need to shorten my stay at the Landour language school because I need to go to Nepal! (For example.)

EDIT: And, no, I can't have a student visa; I've checked.
