Marital Status Mistake in the passport, can I face any legal action?

Hello All,
I am a indian lady married in March,2003.

In 2005 I asked one agent to apply for a passport for me.
He filled up the form & I signed it. After few days I got the passport.

Now there is one mistake he has done while filling my form.
****He has written my marital status as UNMARRIED in the form by mistake.***

I want to renew my passport so that correct marital information is printed on my passport. For this I have to fill up the passport renewel form along with a Marriage Affidevit.

Now I want to ask whethere I can face any legal action, because of wrong infromation in my passport application about the marital status earlier which is by mistake. What should I do?

Nivedita sparton.

Facts:
Marriage in 2003
Passport made in 2005

I wouldn't think so.

I would correct the mistake asap; talk to your nearest passport office.

I dont think any legal action will be taken. Go to the nearest passport office. There is a form that needs to be filled up, incase you are married, there will be an attestation in your passport. I dont know if there is any indication of Married/ unmarried on the first page of the passport. There is way too much for them to worry about. Incase they ask questions- the standard reply - the travel agent did it for me, he messed up.. works wonders!

Problem is that I have signed it, so I am responsible for all the information provided.

Now my concern is that it is a legal mistake done unknowingly, In my openion I may have to pay some panelty for it. Is it possible that they may give any other/more punishment or any law suit against me which may cause serous issues for me?

I just took a look at Bangalore Passport office's website and yeah, there is a penalty of Rs.500 for inadvertent suppression of information regarding marital status (S. No. xiv).

It's very complimentary to the site and its members that people should ask us such questions.

We appreciate that! But we are not professionals, and nobody here can give you a definitive answer to your question.

My opinion...

I'd say... it is a pity you didn't get it corrected at the time, but I think you will be fine just to correct it with your new passport now.

It may help you to go through an agent agent again: they have the contacts that may be able to smooth out small irregularities.

What surprises me, given that Indian passport has space to specify name of spouse, is that you missed the whole section!
