The ordinary Tourist visa can be anything up to 6 months at their discretion.

Hmm, what a conundrum; my flight is booked for the end of November with a return date just a week shy of 6 months later in May. Had been planning to turn up at the High Commission at 3 or 4 in the morning the week before departure to queue for a visa, but this thread got me thinking that maybe I should go up much earlier, sometime in the next couple of weeks in case I'm unsuccessful first time round. Now it occurs to me that if I do apply early I run the risk that some eagle eyed clerk might spot a potential overstayer and I'll be refused a visa.

Has anyone here been refused a visa and then reapplied successfully a few weeks later?

My current thoughts are that it may be better to risk having to pay an extra £50 to change my outward flight than being refused a visa, period...... still cheaper and more convenient than having to go to Nepal later in my trip to renew, but then of course we'll be getting on towards the solstice silly season when the world and her husband will be wanting to travel & flight availability might be problematic.

Ah, decisions, decisions. Que sera, sera I guess. Keep posting the latest updates, peeps

As I understand it, it's still OK to turn up very early and get your visa in the same day, I hope this is still the case as I'll be getting my visa soon and will probibly get there at about 5, or maybe 4 as others will start getting there early as well.

Yeah, cheers Steven, that's what I figure. Thermals, flask of coffee, a good book or two, and arrive very, very early. Dec 2005 I got to the High Commission around 8 a.m., there were probably a hundred or less in front of us in the queue, and we got our visas by about 11:30. I'll book a couple of disposably cheap "fun fare" coach tickets for two consecutive days so that I can try again the following day if I don't succeed first time.
BTW you're extensive knowledge was invaluable for my first trip to India - thank you. Good luck with your own visa application and happy, safe travels

There's no cover, so check the weather before going, rain should be avoided it can be a real pain with the wind.

The rules haven't changed; it's still okay to get visas for all your family.

Question Dual citizenship

Hi, great thread and very informative. My partner and i are leaving on 27th of Nov and were planning on leaving it to the week before we go but we think we will now go earlier just to be safe.

Can any one tell me, will they process a visa on the same day if i have dual citizenship? all it says on the website is it may take longer! how much longer hours or days??? !

Thanks in advance

An update: my boyfriend went today, due to train delays he only arrived at 11:45 but managed to get a q ticket - for November 8th! I don't know if this is because he arrived so late or because that's how long the delays are now, but as we fly on November 9th he managed to swap with a kind fellow queuer for an October 29th ticket. So it seems that the situation is getting worse and worse as word gets out.

Part of the problem with the delay is the increased workload from non tourist visas. Firstly, there is a greater number of applications for visas for employment or business in India, which take much longer to process than tourist visas. Secondly, there are a number of applications for OCI status (which is quasi dual citizenship of persons of Indian descent). Initial processing of OCI applications is done at the overseas consulate and is much more time consuming than a tourist visa. I do not have to tell you that London real estate is very expensive so that the Indian govt does not want to relocate for a temporary crunch. (Once a person is an OCI then they do not have to apply for tourist or employment visas ever!) So the situation in the future should improve.

Hi,
I applied for student visa in year 2001 for London and have to wait in about a line of 150 people standing on the pavement. Luckily somebody told me about all this shit and I came early at about 6.00 am from my hotel. Still I had to wait till the people in front of me were cleared. I do agree there was no system at that time in front of this high commision's office.

If you have Dual Citizenship (OCI) then you wont need a visa....will you????
