The service at the moment for visas is fast.

Passports and other bits sent the tuesday before last and got back the following tuesday. I thought that was pretty good

Lord knows what it will be like when they outsource.

My big worry would be to give away my one most important document, my passport that may be handled by unknown, and may be even unchecked personal. How will they handle security?

VFS is a big global company, many missions use it.

In the paranoid UK? No chance.

Of course, someone will take your data home on a laptop and loose it, but that's standard govt-department practice these days !

The same way that it is handled in India, when one applies for a British visa on an Indian passport through the VFS.

But would you trust it to the post office?

That is probably very much more risky than trusting it to a guy who drives a van between two places every day.

Have to admit, I'm very loathe to trust my passport to the post, though I have trusted it to an independent agent to get my visa.

VFS is pretty good at what they do. I just went there last Wednesday to apply for a VISA and was pretty impressed with the infrastructure as well as the professionalism of the folks handling the same. Well spoken and versed.

The entire process is pretty streamlined as well..it took us about 40 minutes (which includes waiting time) for the entire thing, including the bio-metric scan.

Supposed to go there again today to pick the VISA's up (did not want them to be couriered)
