Goancanuck is talking about residency permits and the type of visas you can get if you own property in India. Beyond getting a business visa (difficult), there is no way to stay in India longer than six months at a time. If you are just touring India, you have to get the six-month tourist visa. If you want to stay longer, you have to leave the country, get a new visa, and then return (tourist visas are non-renewable).

I am actually very much interested in moving to India (as a matter of fact I am flying to India on December 20th). I am not talking about touring. I am looking in to all kinds of legal aspects of being able to live and work in India.
It's a bit of complicated situation, as I was born in India, in the international community of Auroville, and lived there the first 7 years of my life. I am now at the age of 24, an MBA graduate, and want to return to India, to live and work. The funny thing is: I have an Indian birth certificate (and an Indian name), but still as my parents are not Indian, I cannot apply for a PIO status. Anyways, this was besides my Question. I was just wondering if the 1x or 2x visa status was only available to certain nationalities, as I cannot find anything about it at the Dutch embassy. So if I did want to follow the route GoanCanuck took (stay in India more than 182 days, buy property, return to Netherlands and apply for 1x or 2x visa), would that be possible for someone from the Netherlands. I would like to avoid a situation where I would be forced to leave India every 6 months. An X visa which is extendable in India itself would be an ideal situation. |

. But the Indian visa regulations specifically make this hard. Else, I guess, they would say "6-month visas. Or just ask us if you want a longer one...." ![]()
