Is there a one year visa ?

I am leaving for india on the 17 of November and am goign to get my visa very shortly. I want to go for at least six months but maybe more. My travelling companion seems to think there is a year tourist visa? Is that true? I have only heard of a 180 day tourist visa.
And is it very difficult to get an extension because from what I've read it seems that way.
Please help.

the tourist visa is for up to 6 months from the date of issue (not entry to India). There is a 1 year 'visitor/business' visa and a long-term (1-5yr) visa which can be issued in some circumstances. The basic information for Canadians is on the web-site of the High Commission in Ottawa:

I think you would have to talk with an official at one of the consular offices in person to see if you might be eligible for more than the regular 6 month visa.
