Indian visa/PIO Card question

How can i get my kid's 6 months visa extended while in India.
He is a US Citizen. Can i get PIO card for him while in India and how? I have heard that u should be on long term (one year at least ) visa to be eligible for applying for PIO in India.PLease help.

You have to give a lot more information. What is your visa? What is the purpose of your visit to India? Are you here long-term, eg working? Are you registered as resident (assuming you you are not an Indian Citizen?

As your question stands so far, the answer is almost certainly 'no'. It is almost impossible to get a tourist visa converted, and yes, you should be here on a one-year or greater visa to apply for PIO.

Yes i am an Indian Citizen by birth.Both of the parents are indian citizen. We came to india from US to visit family. My son(US citizen minor) is here on Tourist visa (6 months).Due to some reason I dont want to go back
-how can i get his visa extended.
-do i need to leave the country go somewhere and get a longterm visa .
-can i get a PIO card in India .

This is one of those strange situations, where the child is of differennt nationality to the parent, and I think there are many such cases among NRIs. I have Indian-citizen friends in London whose children hold British passports.

I had better say, before I go on any further, that I do not know the answer.

When you say you do not want to go back, do you mean ever or just that you are extending your stay?

If you and your son are becoming resident in India, I think/guess that they will convert his visa to 'X' and/or allow you to apply for a PIO card for him. You are an Indian citizen, with an Indian passport; I don't think they can separate your child from you and tell you to send him home.

My view is that, sooner or later, you have to sit accross a desk with an immigration official at a FRRO and put these questions to him. I'd say, better to do that sooner.

You do still have an Indian Passport? Not American? If American, and you are both here on tourist visas, then my thoughts are that you have to go sort this out back in US, as if you have taken US citizenship then (notwithstanding your birth, or your entitlement to OCI or PIO) then you are not an NRI, you are a foreigner.

I am an Indian citizen with Indian passport. can i go to somewhere near to India (Thailand, Bangladesh or Nepal, Bhutan) and get a long term visa.

If I were you I'd try in India first. Could save you a trip.

It's one of those if you don't as you'll never know things. If they say no you haven't lost anything.

I don't know if they are likely to ask for any authority from the child's mother, if she is still in USA. Don't know if they do that; some countries probably would.
