I wouldnt get anything from Kaosan rd and I certainly wouldn't give them my passport. The agents round there are world famous for ripping anyone and everyone off. (Anyone in doubt of this fact, enter 'khao san rd scams' into google) I was thinking of actually going to the embassy, just wondered what I needed to take? |

Maybe you know your way around Khao San rd, but others may give their passport to the wrong people based on tour tip. |

Can I recast Sunray's question...
...and ask anyone who knows whether it is worth waiting for Bangkok to get my Indian visa (I will be in Bangkok two weeks in January, before India), or get it here by going through the obnoxious process of mailing my passport to the Indian consulate in New York with a money order (they don't take checks!) for the cost of the visa and registered mail? The price is about the same in the US or Thailand, I just don't know if it takes a long time in Bangkok, or if there is any issue because my passport has stamps from subversive places like ...uh... Mexico and Turkey. Anyone with any experience?
Also, the web site for the Indian embassy in Thailand is gone! |

I would do it before I left. It's probably the same in Bangkok, you'll have to wait a few days. It's the same here in Oslo.

I got an Indian visa (tourist 6 month visa) in Bangkok just last spring. I had no problems whatsoever. I dropped the application form off with two photos and then picked up my visa five days later. (I'm not American, so it was completely painless.)
There are different requirements if you are American. There is an extra fee and they are required to do some extra checking, so it may take longer. I would go directly to the embassy rather than giving my passport to someone on Khao San road. Here's the website for the Indian consulate in Chiang Mai (the address for the Indian Embassy in Bangkok is on this page): http://www.indcon-chiangmai.com/index.html For some reason, the Indian embassy in Bangkok website is down. This info is accurate (and there is a phone number): http://www.visatoindia.com/indian-em...-thailand.html |

Thanks ShantiShanti.
I have pretty much decided to get my visa by mail here in the US. The New York consulate also gives you Sikkim permits, and suggests that you get them with the visa (I'll write the info under Sikkim once I get all the details). Don't worry about my going to Khao San road; it is not a place I frequent or enjoy, but thanks for the warning. (GEEK SPEAK ASIDE: Firefox cannot properly handle the http://www.visatoindia.com/indian-em...-thailand.html web site; I had to use IE) |

Hi Sunray,
My name is Note from Bangkok. I just applied for India visa on Friday 23th and they told me to pick it up on Monday 26th. It is pretty fast and not crowd. It opens at 9 am to noon. You need to bring your passport, a copy of the first page, an application, and two photos. |

Bloody hell
After some wait and people stressing me out by unintentionally joining the queue. I'm british, so queue jumping gets on my tits and Indian workers do not defend the queue, so it was left to me....anyway...
6 days wait. What are they doing ffs. |
