Indian Passport with 20 yaers validity.
I have an Indian passport with 20 years validity. My passport was issued from Kolkata RPO and it will be expired on March 2017. I have used this passport for last 6 years travelling US, Canada abd UK. But recently I have gathered from US consulate website (India) that US consulate is not accepting Indian passport for 20 with 20 years validity. As presently I am staying at Delhi, I went to RPO but unfortunately they were not sure what to do. Some one told me if I go to kolkata, may be it will be easy. But I am really very confused what to do. My passport has still validity for another 12 years.
ANY IDEA WHAT TO DO? Thank you! |

IMO you do have to apply for a duplicate passport in Kolkata, the original issuing office as your file would be there. However if you have been residing in Delhi for the past two years (pls check the current requirement) and have a 'ration card' or voter registration card issued in Delhi you may be able to apply for the passport there itself. This may take a longer period of time as they may have to request your file from Kolkata. Alternatively, instead of making a trip to Kolkata you could also try and submit it thru a travel agent who has a branch in there. You may have to give a covering letter explaining the circumstances why you need a new booklet with the changed validity and also ensure to point out the page number of your current passport on which the US visa is endorsed (if presently valid) so that they do not put 'cancelled' stamps all over it, it's been known to happen
. You may also want to enclose a printout of the web page of the US embassy where it mentions the validity requirements.MEA Passport page: http://passport.nic.in/ Last edited by Hyderabadi : Apr 7th, 2005 at 21:10. Reason: To add link. |

Thank you. I am staying at delhi for last 9 months and don't have any voter id card or ration card. So it seems to me Kolkata will be best bet . I have approached a very reputed Travel Agent from Kolkata. but they said I have to meet PRO personally. Meeting with PRO in any Passport office is not always easy. they are man with high demand. But may be I will try it again.
Take care! |

Update!
The U.S.Govt now accepts 20 year Indian Passports, "contrary to recent press accounts". Wonder who put up that 'not accepted' page on their website previously!
