How long is the processing time for an Indian passport?

In what country .... India, UK, USA ....

Is it a new one (First Time) or a renewal?

If its India.... Then its approximately 25-30 days if you've applied the normal way, 7-10 days if you took the tatkaal method.

First time application in Bangalore.

Apply as soon as you can and make no mistakes in the application. Give an address where somebody will be there should a policeman show up to conduct an inquiry. Let everyone know to expect such a visit and, if you are not there, not say they don't know you. That's all you can do. Then it will take whatever time it takes.

What about the police visit? Is it a sort of check?

I am not sure if they do it everywhere. Basically, the passport office asks your local police station if you are an ok person, and not some criminal with flight risk. Then it is up to the officer in charge there. Sometimes they see they have no bad record on you and just sign the paper. Sometimes a cop would show up to "investigate", which is usually a friendly chat with expectation of some "bakshish".

Also, the police is supposed to verify that you actually live at the address you supplied.

Why don't you google up for the Info you are looking for?Try Passport office+ bangalore' in google. It generally takes a month. I got my passport after 4 months when i applied in 2006. If you check thier website, there is info on how you can get the passport within 10 days ,provided you meet the specified regulations.That sort of an application is called Tatkaal.

What is the meaning of self-attested copies of documents? That I need to sign on the documents or say attested and then sign below it?
