In "Maximum City: Bombay Lost & Found," Suketu Mehta devotes the better part of a chapter to getting a gas connection in Mumbai. His eventual solution? His elderly auntie appeals to the person at the desk to have sympathy on the poor children. How will she be able to cook for them without gas?

Oh, and I've got a gas connection. My landlady living downstairs couldn't get one (no ration card) so her gas (from a non-governmet gas agency) costs her heaps more than mine does. I enjoy that fact

If I've got a gas connection, I wonder what chances of getting a ration card?
You have a gas connection but you're thinking of moving house? Is that prudent?

Your post made me think of stories about New Yorkers who manage to find a parking space for their car and then refuse to ever drive it for fear of never being able to find a space again!

Coming back to the original question, you do realise dont you that the immigrations laws in india give the officer the powers to ask the questions he/she does of a traveller. So if a question about hotel booking is asked and you present a print out of a web site that will lead to the next question do you have a booking. You lie and say yes and if that officer nails your lie (its not diffcult in this day and age to phone a foreign hotel reservation (its probably based in a call centre down the road and the officer can even speak in hindi to the operator). where does that leave you then? One lie and how can he trust anything else you say. the reason these questions are aksed is because the far east is a big staging post for people trafickers. International governments are putting pressure on asian govts to tighten up their procedures and the immigration officer on the frontline is the first to get his earful from superiors about how to explain to ministers why his port is a big loophole exploited by people trafickers. So while it is easy to blame these officers bear in mind that it is also your responsibility to be on the right side of the law.

In the movies?

Oh, please, DD --- don't lean across the desk, grab the guy by the neck, whirl him around your head letting him fly off into the concrete wall. Then leap onto the desk, jumping from desk to desk, kick-boxing the others into unconciousness (stopping, of course ---for effect--- to give a long hard stare into the eyes of the only one to fight back, with a brief smile before headbutting him into eternity.

Who the hell will deal with the other waiting passengers if you do?

Matt67, My original post was based on my mis-placed apprehensions. As other IM members mentioned at that time, there wre no questions asked ,except maybe the purpose of visit. I have not encountered any problems .I have flown abroad twice since then and they have never asked about hotel bookings. We will never go to such an extent of calling call centre agents about hotel booking.

It may only be a year ago, but Batistuta is an older and wiser man.

The progression from questioner to answerer is a kind of IndiMike metamorphosis for those who stick around and I'm glad that Batistuta did

Congrat's on that first thousand posts, too, Batistuta

The only time I have been asked for hotel information and when I intend to leave and generally given a hard time was in the US ... Give me Indian officials anyday.

.. and they are often much more abrupt, even rude, with many foreigners, than the ones in India.

American immigration officials are appalling. It quite literally puts me off going to or through the US - but the silver lining is that I ended up discovering India and now can't stay away from the place. Second trip in six months coming up next week!

(If only you could get half-price Abercrombie & Fitch in Delhi like you can in New York then I'd be in my element!)
