Mrs N is ...errr several decades older than 17. She still got ECR in her passport (She also got sex: M, but then the incompetance of the passport office and Mrs N's passport is another story, told somewhere here on IM. Some time, we'll get it changed but Mrs N isn't wild about foreign travel...)

If you have sufficient education or money they will decide they don't need to protect you.

xerox copies never work anywhere unless they are attested by a notary or accompanied by an affidavit and even with these you are at the mercy of the dark lord...

anything with indian beaurocracy, take all the papers..ALL!..originals whereever possible, or attested copies of originals if you must, be neatly dressed..not nice or ragged or flashy, give the biggest smile and be super nice..even if the bamboo is swinging in all directions...

yes..take papers of your kindgarten grades if you have those.

oh..it helps to have an politician uncle or an aunt in some govt office...

In all passposrt office across India they will refuse to do anything without the originals. Its not a beauracracy but a requirement mentioned in the form clearly. Notarized will not work either. And it doesn't mean "wherever original as possible" either. That doesn't work either. It has to be original. This is a strict policy that is actually enforced.

Even overwriting is not allowed - if you end up overwriting or scratching you have to fill out a new form.

For once my sympathy here is with the passport guys: how can you get a stamp in your passport without taking the passport?

If the Ecnr conditions are not met (a secondary school leaving
certificate is minimum)they put a note called emigration
check required .
Now if you take the required documents later ,then they
put a stamp on the echeck required saying Deleted and
put new one in another page saying No echeck required.
THis takes one day ,but there is a slight catch,
You need to take your PASSPORT

Sheeesh, man, you're thinking like the Babus. Just because I didn't bring my passport doesn't mean I shouldn't go somewhere or get my passport stamped.

It's a bit like the ration card story. If you had a ration card, you get any OTHER document based on it. Now, ration cards are only issued to people BPL (Below Poverty Line)

So conversation goes like

me: Need a gas connection
them: address proof, ration card?
me: I don't have
them: get ration card first
me: I cant get one as I'm not BPL
them: without ration card, no gas connection
me: OK, issue me ration card
them: no, you're not eligible for one
me: so, the gas connection...
them: get ration card

me, I joined the maoist rebels, last month. they had no forms to sign anyway.

But you don't get into the promised land without an ECNR stamp!

Oh, and I've got a gas connection. My landlady living downstairs couldn't get one (no ration card) so her gas (from a non-governmet gas agency) costs her heaps more than mine does. I enjoy that fact

If I've got a gas connection, I wonder what chances of getting a ration card?

I see that this is a quick path to getting your gas connection cancelled.

the GOI may be slow in applying her weight but when she does wake from her slumber, a billion people get crushed under the paper juggernaut.
