Indian embassy in Spain

Has put a notice on its website saying that all postal services are suspended since last 22nd of June. We don't know what's happening with the passports and visa applications we've sent as they're not answering the phone; and those of us who live far from Madrid are all panicking as departure dates are drawing closer.

It may be down to the amnesty granted to illegal immigrants last year. Thousands of Indian youths need paspsorts to get their immigration status legalised.

The Indian Embassy were a real pain in the backside for those requiring new passports. They made people jump through hoops and went out of their way to avoid giving passports to those who were entitled. This issue was raised in India by a few politicians. Maybe orders have come from high command in India for them to get their backsides in gear and to start issuing passports.

To get the visa in the Indian Embassy in Madrid is really a question of "blind faith" and better to say is a nightmare. In general spanish people travel during summer time even to India. The only way now to get a visa is personally in the Consulate in Madrid. Normally I take one year visa multiple entries (each stay cannot exceed 180 days) just to avoid this kind of problems.

Dear Shere,

I am talking about people applying for tourist visas. I do have a new passport which is currently at the Indian embassy waiting for a visa stamp, so I can go to India for my summer holiday.

It hadn't occurred to me that the situation with illegal immigrants could have anything to do with our case. Still, who knows?

Another option to get a VISA in Spain is to be in contact with some agency like Infoservice or Anfer. I have the same troubles and to call to the Indian Embassy is mission impossible, they don't catch the phone never. I've tried 50 times without luck. Most people travel to Madrid to get the VISA personally, but this means losing several days, because the VISA often can't be purchased the very same day. I'll try with some agency and I hope I've luck, I've sent my passport to the Embassy on 20th of June and I'm traveling in the middle of August.

Cheers and good luck!!!

I know from the spanish forum in Lonelyplanet that most of the people who were in trouble, have got already their visa. It semms that the problem is the inefficiency of the indian people in the Consulate. Probably the same problem you normally have when you must struggle with indian bureaucracy.

Sara, just checking I understand you correctly:

You want to apply for a visa for India, and you are currently in Spain touring, but will be in the UK at some point in the future. It looks as though you hold a Canadian passport.

If that is all correct, then:

1) You can apply for a 6 month tourist visa for India once you get to England.
2) You should allow 5 working days for the application to be accepted.
3) The fee is GBP30 for the visa, plus a GBP10 non-UK resident fee.

HTH
