India Visa from Malaysia?

My friend will be in Malaysia next month while I will be in India, we were wondering what the closest place to get a visa would be??

I know you can get one in Thailand...is there any place closer??

mmm actually I couldn't find out if it was possible to get a visa done there, as it says on their faq:

"Visa can be applied for in person or by post at the High Commission of India in London."

(this is taken from http://www.indianhighcommission.com.m y/faq.html The high commission of India in Malaysia website...)

Anyone can confirm if its possible to get a visa done there?

Check out the Visa FAQ thread... there's a link there to an Indian Government site with a complete list of Indian Missions abroad.

Remember... If you are not resident in the country where you apply for the visa they will send your details to your home country, so allow the required number of days for this to happen before you get it.

Hang on, let me just find Malaysia on a UK map...

Wierd! Maybe some idiot did a cut&paste from the London site without reading it?

OK.... check out the link to the application form on the right of the page. All about getting it in Kuala Lumpur.

thanks Nick-H... my first guess was that it was probably a cut&paste error hehe...

Seems like its possible to get a visa in Kuala Lumpur by showing up in person (at the commission of India)...so in any cases, it is worth showing up just to find out!... Ill let my friend know!

Thanks to all who replied!...

Visa in KL

I got a visa in KL easily in December 06. It took about 5 days. However, I happened to get it thru a travel agent, because I got a deal to travel with a tour. But I would have gotten it as a single traveller as well, I think.

Be well.

Does anyone have recent experience with getting a visa from Malaysia? Particulary as an alternative to Thailand for back-to-back tourist or business visas?

On the official website it appears to be as straight-forward as Thailand, and does all visa categories.

http://www.indianhighcommission.com...._services.html

It seems they now have outsourced to an agent who can process from Johor Bahru which is right next to Singapore (the flights from India to SIN seem significanlty less then to KL.)

“with effect from 1 August 2007 the visas can be applied only at the India Visa Centres at Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru managed by M/s. Grandlotus Travel Agencies Sdn Bhd. For details you may visit their website www.indiavisa.com.my

However, it seems a bit unclear or contradictory on foreign passport holders. On one hand the IHC FAQs says; (http://www.indianhighcommission.com.m y/faqs.html)

5. What is the procedure to apply for visa for holder of foreign Passport?
Ans : Applicant holding any passport other than Malaysia can apply for visa if resident in Malaysia .

But then there’s text like this…

Applicants not ordinarily resident in Malaysia and Sri Lankan nationals are required to complete an additional form. Please note that each application is examined individually and the time taken for issuing Visa will vary from case to case.

Normally the processing of visa applications at the High Commission Of India takes two working days. However, incases of applications from persons not ordinarily residing in Malaysia or from people of Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan origin it may take one week or in some cases much longer.

So seems possible with patience. Could be good alternative to BKK and allow trips to Sumatra / Singapore, or even being closer to Southern Thailand beaches if you get it from Penang.

Of course there's always the consulars individual discretion - has anyone had good or difficult experiences with the consulate or Outsourced agent in KL, or from Johor Bahru or Penang?
