India Visa For Children Of British Citizen

Hi

I am a British Citizen currently working (and registered) in India on an Employment Visa.

My 11yr old daughter (also a British Citizen) needs to join me urgently and I want to know the best way to do this.

Also, which visa should I apply for, for her?

Kind regards

Barbara

Unless Im mistaken I think your daughter would be able to get a tourist visa easily.

If her visit will be for less than 180 days, a tourist visa is the most straightforward.

If for longer, as in becoming a part of your family household here, you could apply for an 'Entry' visa for her. Then you probably have to produce all the documentation you produced for your own employment visa, or, at the very least, a copy of the visa.

But... "which visa should I apply for, for her?" ---

I guess she has to apply in UK, assuming that is where she is; I don't see how you can apply in India for her. You'd need her passport, for a start.

What occurs to me next, I'm sure you'll have thought of too: I'm sure visas are not just handed out to 11-yr-olds, nor will they be accepted no-questions-asked by an airline. I guess you have an adult the other end to take care of those things. A letter from you might be required.

Quickets and simplest: get her here on a tourist visa and take it from there.

The usual disclamer: this is just my opinion, I am not a professional, etc etc (probably that's obvious anyway )

Hi Nick_H

If I apply for a Tourist Visa would I be able to modify it at a later date to an entry visa (to enable her to stay for longer than 180 days)?

I was intending to complete the visa application online.

What other documentation would she require?

Thanks for the reply :-)

Bettertake a look at the new London HCI/VFS Outsourcing sites ---but I'm guessing that you already have as you speak of applying online.

Although it takes longer and costs more than it used to, a British citizen applying for a an Indian tourist visa is pretty much a rubber-stamp job. Didn't need more than the passport, photographs and cash last time I did it, but that was a while back.

Your problem is her being a child. You might work around the visa office by getting her father to apply at the same time and letting them assume they will travel together --- but if she is going to travel alone, you'll have to find out what the airline requires to accept her.

They may even make a fuss about a child travelling with an adult other than parent, in these days of paranoia that we live in.

Technically, a tourist visa cannot be converted, but it is known that it actually can be in cases such as marriage (a bit extreme, not really suggesting that here.... ) so there is no guarantee.

Of course, if you were going to fetch her...

Hi

My Boss will be bringing her back (hopefully) as he is in the UK till the end of June (and she knows him :-))
He is an Indian National.
However, if it isn't completed in time, British Airways will allow her to travel (on an adult fare + £32) and she will be escorted throughout.

I have checked out their new 'online visa' site ut there is no answer to this.

I am concerned that a tourist visa will mean she would have to return afte 6 months, which would be useless after getting her settled and into school here.

I am really wanting to know the best way to bring my daughter over that allows her an education and me to continue my work here.

What do other foreigners with children do?

Thanks

I think you should get the X visa, right from the start.

You still have twenty more days (approx) of June: fax over your own passport copy, visa copy, employment contract copy and get that application made as soon as possible.

If your boss is involved in helping you out with this, I don't think it sounds too bad.

An X visa is the term used for an entry visa and it's used for a lot of different categories of entry visas. The spouses and minor children of people who have employment visas can get X visas that have a duration that's co-extensive with the employment visa. You should check with the Indian authorities to verify what documentation you'll need to get this kind of visa for your daughter.

I can't imagine that there would be any problem getting this visa, other than possibly a time crunch -- but as long as she doesn't absolutely have to travel by the end of June, getting her an X visa as the dependent of a person with an employment visa is the way to go.

Pls get the paperwork done in the UK. Do not ever think of landing on a tourist visa and then processing this type of a visa.

With correct paperwork, I'd expect it to be over-the-counter. But with the new VHS scheme 'over-the-counter' doesn't exist any longer.

Still, shouldn't take long.
