India introduces long-term tourist visa

http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/...urist_Visa.php

NEW DELHI: India on Thursday announced a long-term, multi-entry tourist visa for nationals from 18 countries to promote tourism.

The visa will have a five-year validity with the stipulation that each visit shall not exceed 90 days, a government statement said.

The countries to be covered are France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Spain, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Vietnam, the statement said.

Indian tourism is booming. International tourist arrivals rose 13.2 percent over 2005 to a new high of nearly 4 million, and the government expects arrivals over 2006 to grow by 15 percent.

So????

10 year multi-entry visas valid for 6 months at a time are already on offer. Unless the fees are reduced, it's just a publicity stunt

Just to put things in perspective, Dubai -- a single city -- currently gets about 8 million international tourist arrivals per year. France, the world's top tourist destination, received 77 million tourist arrivals in 2000. Finland received 4 million in 2000. India has just become Finland . . . And these numbers are six years old. Hardly "booming."

But nice that India is making the visa process easier.

So how does that work? The border hop a.k.a. the visa run all over again, and would that work?

Just interested, it's an honest question.

I thought the 10-year visas are only available to Americans; these 5-year visas are for other countries' citizens.

Just to get this straight for future seekers, by all accounts they are. See also Dzibead above (post #4).

But when?

Any idea as to when they will actually start issuing these visas?

Checked a few of the websites of the consulates in the countries mentioned, and couldn't find a mention of this new policy.

On a side note, while I obviously appreciate the new policy, the "up to 90 days" rule is ever so slightly annoying...
