i didnt pay for a multiple entry but i got it?
so, the fee for a tourist visa for india (1 year) is 60$
multiple entry visas cost more.
i.. only payed 60$
and yet, on the "No. entries" section of the visa
it is stamped "multiple"
was that a ..mistake of the consulate?

hmmmmmmmmm. well, this is what is says on the website for the Tourist visa:
TOURIST VISA: Tourist visas valid for six-month and one year (six months stay each time) are available. Ten-year Tourist visas permitting a stay of maximum of six-month on each visit are available to U.S. citizens who are frequent visitors to India. A person desirous of visiting India frequently but not intending to stay for more than six months at a time is advised to apply for this type of visa. Please note that it is not possible to extend your stay in India beyond 6 months if you are visiting India on this visa. For non-US nationals, who are permanent residents of US 5 year tourist visa with six months stay each visit is available.
i guess i assumed that meant single entry as it doesn't say multpile anywhere-- except on my visa, that is. hah
ASSume and you become an ASS
sorry everyone.

Does the 6 month max. stay mean that in theory I can leave India for a month, then come back for the remaining 5 months on my visa? Is there a time period requirement as to how long a person must not be in India between stays? I am planning to get the one year visa...

well, this is their website for the consulate in ny:www.indiacgny.org
but nowhere in the rules of the visa does it say how long you must stay out before coming back in. so.. id say you can come for a single DAY and leave for a day, and then come back.. and itd be fine. since, they are multiple-entry
someone else might know contrary information though..

EDIT: wait, it says:Tourist visas valid for six-month and one year (six months stay each time) are available
so.
so that means I can only stay a max of 6 months in one year with that visa, regardless if I leave the country for a few days/month/etc. and want to come back? I am gonna look this up right now...

My impression was that the visa runs for a 6 month period. In that period from issue you should be able to depart and re-enter..
Tourist Visa for US Nationals can be aquired for 6 months, 1 year or 10 years. But the maximum amount of stay would be 6 months at a time. You can fly out to Srilanka or Bangladesh or any other country for a day to come back the next day. Then you can stay for another 6 months. And so on....
this is going to be difficult
As I was cruising the NYC Consulate/DC Embassy Visa pages, I came across your answer. I would go check it out there first BUT from what I gathered, you are probably not going to be able to get a conversion on your visa in India, although the website did say it is not completely out of the question to try. If you know someone who with connections, I would pursue it through that end...

That "six month visa" is good for six months from the date they paste it into your passport -- at the end of six months, it becomes invalid no matter that you've only spent a week or a month in India.
This is about staying longer than 180 days continuous.......Ithink
