How to go India without Passeport ?
Hi,
I live in France and I asked in indian embassy (in France) a passeport for my daughter who is 2 month old. I'm going to India in 4 days (12 april), and the passeport is not ready yet. Can I ask, in indian embassy, for a temporarly travel document instead of passeport, to go India ? Thanks in advance. PS : sorry my english is not good. PS 2 : I really need help, because I can't cancel my ticket, wich I already paid. Mod Note: She has Indian nationality, see her post No 9. Last edited by Nick-H : Apr 9th, 2008 at 13:26. |

? If you're French or of any other nationality but Indian, you should get a passport with your own appropriate departments, not with the Indian embassy, of course.
To book a ticket without having the appropriate documents in order is obviously not a good idea, and no one's problem but your own, certainly not that of the embassy of your destination. Young kids often get registered on their parent's passport, no idea how this works in France. Where I live at least you should normally be able to arrange a travel document within a day or so if necessary, you can count on this costing you extra. Try http://www.interieur.gouv.fr/, http://www.service-public.fr/, or call your city council. I don't think India will accept any other kind of travel document no. Or do you mean a visa? That would be handled by the Indian embassy or their representatives yes. Again, maybe there exists an emergency deal, but it will depend. They'll be your best source of information for it. See http://www.amb-inde.fr/fr/index.asp (they do indeed indicate a visa can be arranged speedily but at an extra cost. Apparently the standard procedure shouldn't take very long anyway.) I trust you've thought about what traveling to India with a baby entails, by way of health and climatic precautions and so on?

I don't know the rules in France, or for French citizens, but in England a baby needs their own passport AND their own visa to travel to India.

Passport or Visa--you certainly cannot enter India without them. Have no idea about requirements for a child but I can tell you if you don't have a Visa you will be sent home. They will not let you in the country without one. Our friends forgot to get theirs and were put on a plane to China after begging for hours at Delhi airport. China happened to be their next stop on their round-the-world trip. They got their visas and came back to India a few weeks later.

Bonjour Sania,
Voulez-vous dire un passeport ou un visa ? Le passeport devrait être publié par le gouvernement français et le visa par l'ambassade indienne. Vous ne pourrez pas entrer dans l'Inde en dehors * tous les deux * de ces documents. Cheers Zoltan

Did the OP confuse the Indian visa with a passport for the infant? Or did the French passport for the child not arrive in time for a visa? My guess is for the latter but I think discount ticket is toast. Gotta dot the i's..

I don't think there is any confusion in the question.
Even by looking at my British passport I can see that the French equivalent is passeport. You should see if your French passport authority is prepared to endorse your passport with the details of the child travelling with you, and then see if the Indian embassy is prepared to issue a visa on that basis. I wish you had 4 weeks, not 4 days. Probably you do too. Good luck!

Thanks for answer.
I have indian nationality and my daughter's too. So I'm talking about indian passeport, in Indian Embassy. We don't need Visa. In France, baby needs their own passport. |

Sania,
Have you got a "livret de famille" (family booklet) ? This is a legal document from the french authorities which gives details of all of the members of your family. It is considered a legal document for travel for children under 2yrs of age within the EU (vous pouvez voyager avec un enfant moins de deux ans avec ce document à l'interieur de l'UE). I suggest you go to your local Mairie to get a carte d'identité /identity card which IS ok for foreign travel within Europe. I know India is not within Europe but it might be your only chance.... Who knows! Good luck and let us know what you do, it may help others |

? It's some situation alright.
I'd just explain to the Indian embassy that you need a travel document for your child, now, as your plane is leaving in three days. Be patient and polite, but persistent all the same. Go over in person, carry the child on your arms. And so on. Cause a bit of a contained drama if they try to send you away just like that. I imagine they should assist you; a definite complication could be if they need to refer to records with the Indian Home Office or even your birthplace or something -- and they well may. I don't think a EU identity card will get you very far no, alas. That livret de famille just might. My French ain't what it never was, but, er, Expliquez (préférement en personne) à l'ambassade que vous necessitez un passeport ou un autre document de passage pour ta fille tout de suite, car vous devoit voyager à l'Inde en trois jours. Kindly do note this forum normally sticks to English btw, it just becomes a mess if other languages get thrown in. Don't worry, people will try to understand you, or they will ask again if something is unclear. Last edited by machadinha : Apr 10th, 2008 at 05:01. |
