Shivani - if you have all in order and your papers correct, bribing shouldn't come into it. Look as if you know nothing about it. Your Indian fiance will be the one to handle any of this stuff, not you. Don't worry about it.

Re the registry - wear your most comfortable shoes and clothes in case of long waits. This is on the cards. Keep your nice marriage clothes for the evening celebration. Not doing a marriage certificate, a PIO registration in our FRO office took three hours last year. There was nobody else having business attended to, only me. It was damn hot, and I dozed under a fan until they finally got their act together. It was broken by me driving one of the officers to photocopy all the papers for themselves in the central market, and for me to get extra photos. That took around 45 mins. of the time.

When you go there ask how many photocopies of your papers they require.
They needed 8 of everything of mine. If you have all those complete when you go then saving time.

I will have to admit...My registry marriage was *quite* different. We had a lady registrar, who had her own office, allbeit very small, who was honest. When we went, the first time, she was helping us and another girl, but made sure we had all of our papers in order. Then when we came back after the 30 days, it was just us (and like 10 other people) crammed into her small office.

She was very pleasant --- but most Indian register office weddings I've heard of have been close to our experience. The office where we registered our house was bigger and posher, and the registrar had a big desk, but not a separate room. You'll be surprised that the conditions under which government employees work; you'll think it archaic!

When we went to register my mum's death, my wife was asking about how UK register-office weddings are. They showed us one of their marriage rooms, and my wife was astounded!

Nick, how would I know if a bribe is required? Would they ask directly and would they mention the amount they are expecting? Should I offer one even if they don't ask? I've never been asked for a bribe, so imagine it would be extremely embarrassing and awkward.
You should have nothing to do with this. Leave this entirely to your Indian partner, should it arise. You, as well as the officer, are breaking the law; it may not be at all clear to you what they want and how to do it... lots of cultural body language, etc! The clerk asked for Rs100, and even my Indian wife was surprised at the subtlety of the transaction! Bear in mind that she must have known her boss's attitude to bribes, and the boss was sitting six feet away.

Thank you Nick, Aishah, Steph, and Curtdfw

Well, it is a lot clearer now. It doesn't seem to daunting after all! I'll just concentrate on getting all the paperwork organized and maybe we'll even be lucky and get a registrar who is an honest person!

Thanks Aishah, for the advice about wearing comfy clothes. I probably wouldn't have thought of that. At least it won't be hot in the office, if we are kept waiting for hours, cause we would be getting married in the Himachal Pradesh winter season.

It's great to have IndiaMike where one can get real help from people that have been through similar situations :-)

Hi all

Great info here - thank you....

I am a British citizen, planning to marry my indian partner in Tamil Nadu in Dec/Jan. Have just been to the registry office and was told they want the 'certificate of prior singledom'.

I did not get this before I came to India for the very reason that I was told it would be out of date before I needed it. I am now told I need to get one from UK. Can't really afford a trip back to UK, even if I wanted to go! This thread gives me hope I may be able to get one here...

I will be calling the High Commission in Chennai as soon as I am home but, in the meantime, any advice??

Thanks to all and here's to India and all her foibles!

British High Commission - NOC

Well, I traipsed up to the High Commission to get my No Objection Certificate, forked out 3000 rupees to find it is apparently all but useless......

I knew it would not say anything about my marital status but it was incredibly vague; stating that the High Commission does not give out Certificates of No Impediment but has no objection, in general, to British Nationals marrying in India. I suggest any British to-be-weds out there don't waste their money on this!

So, I am still in the same position - can't find a lawyer in UK who will countersign my self-written statutory declaration and a registry office who say they want one.

A helpful 'friend' is coming to the office with me with the promise that Mr Gandhi will see that my paperwork is accepted. Am having real problems coming to terms with having to pay to help things along but if it gets me married without having to go back to UK for a signature, so be it.....

Hey ho, This is India!!!!!

Your NOC sounds very much like the one that's issued by the US Consulate -- see post #6:

Applied for marriage in Bhopal, MP

We had no issues with our consulate-issued doc, so it sounds like you're dealing with a local person who, as is common, has his or her own interpretation of the requirement. Good luck...

In the meantime, I will stop worrying so much and try the NOC I got from the embassy! Maybe I have been misadvised!
