hotel in new york near consulate
if i have to make a trip to new york, does anyone know of a hotel near the consulate and what is the cheapest i can hope to get? i am more scared about going to new york alone than going in asia these days...
i understand i will only have to be there one day with any luck, but the trip by plane there and back from india will be so taxing that i will want to rest at least one day and night-two if i could afford it and what are taxi drivers like in new york? i seem to have forgotten how to live in the usa....i guess they use meters all the time, duh... |

The consulate is on the 64 th street. I don't think that there is much cheap hotels in this area. Last time i was in NY, i stayed at the holliday in which was about 135US a night. Maybe the least expensive you can get there is 90 Bucks. Maybe a real New yorker will be able to back me up on that

The cheapest respectable hotel I know in NYC is the Larchmont, on W12th Street in Greenwich Village. All rooms use shared baths, and each provides a robe and slippers (and towel). Comfortable beds, phones, reading lamps, a/c and fan, and a sink w/hot water in the room. You can use the fridge in the shared kitchen down the hall -- they have permanent residents there as well as some tourists. Juice, coffee and sweet roll is included. Cost is very reasonable -- I think I paid around $70/night two years ago when I was there.
I don't know where the Indian Consulate is, but if you have to take a cab, 5th and 6th Avenues are just 1/2 block away. |

thanks, trvl_in...but unfortunately i am not a foreign lady but an american-
with any luck maybe i will only need one day. now i am worrying they wont give me a ten year visa, and maybe no visa at all. i came here on a one year visa, and received permission for a three month extension. then i went to bangkok and got a six month visa, thinking i wouldnt need anything else. (anyway that is all they would give anyone). so now i am thinking they may say i have been here enough and why do i want to come back so soon, or just think something isnt right and blow me off |

more ideas
i thnk there is a ymca down there as well. you also might try student housing. you can also just stay up all night ;-)
you might try d.c. i know it has a hostel and process visa in a day im told. port authority/bus terminal is nasty -be on guard and look lik eyou know where you are going/doing. dont be afraid of the city though, people can be real harsh, but they are not mean. id try to find a cheap place - you can always take a bus/subway. you are landing in nyc, picking up a visa and then on to india? wow, the possibilities of all this not coming into play are staggering. what if you dont get it? another us100? and another and another no? btw: youl most likely fly out intl via jfk so youll have to plan the logisitcs for another airport. miss: sometimes, you gotta go home. send your visa off to the embassy/consulate overnight with a prepaid return inside. should take 10-14 days easy. -or get a 6 month in bkk. when you grab a taxi give them the street xings...64th and 7th ...or whatever. dont say...the indian embassy. also position yourself on the correct side of the street you need to travel in to cut time/hassle save money and avoid cabbies from driving round the block. hi monkgonemad-
actually a lawyer thinks i have a good case and is going to help-i know how stupid that sounds, but i am going on intuition here and i still have faith that it is possible to find a honest, compatible lawyer. but what are the chances of his being competent or intelligent i wonder??? that's ok, i can help him... but all the same i have to think what to do if it doesnt work...so i am thinking about why a person has to be registered-if i come in on an entry visa, i am allowed to think of immigrating, and that can be the reason for coming. then i get registered, and maybe you dont need a visa after that because you are registered. i know someone who lives in delhi i can ask, i seem to recall she didnt have to keep getting visas, she was registered. hehehe-i AM HOME!!! so i am looking into every possible way of doing this legally. but preparing for the worst...good information on new york, though! |

If you mean my friend Mary, she was married to an Indian fellow for many years, and that probably makes a great difference in her status. |

hi wonderwoman-
i talked to mary yesterday, she just got back from singapore or hong kong (i always get those two mixed up) and she said she didnt need a visa any more once she had the resident permit, and she could leave the country and come back. what i am still not clear on though is whether a resident permit like she had is the same thing as a foreigner being registered... i learned that when you register as a foreigner you get a little passport kind of booklet with your photo-when i talk to mary again i will ask her what she got. of course now she has a pio card, lucky girl! |

hi again salima -
where in manhattan is ok and where to avoid? impossible to answer really....even harlem has gentrified. ...god its been so long since ive been to nyc.... i thnk you want to be around fourth avenue on up. but the midtown streets are ok. 70s are getting out of midtown, but fine. truth to tell, you can walk fourty streets no problem, especially in the chill. if you can find something in the village, chelsea or maybe even fashionable hells kitchen. wonderwoman gave you the larchmont @ us70, although pricey, its cheap by nyc standards. nyc is not cheap! again, you can try schools: nyu and new school in the village. columbia is way out. slog of others.... wish i could be more help. in w.d.c. you can stay at the the ayh and run up to the embassy - - - |
