afaik if you have a Residential Permit you shouls get it stamped by the FRO to say you can go away for a couple of weeks (not leave = 'finally leave' because then you have to surrender your RP to Immigration)

My personal experience (Bangalore not Gujarat):
1. You have to register if your visa is for more than 180 days, but you will only be asked for the RP if you really have been in India for more than 180 days. If your friend also arrived in January and left before the 180 days got over, it explained why he/she wasn't asked for the RP at the airport. Have had the same. As soon as you cross the 180 days they will ask for it and will not let you board the plane. 2. It is usually not a problem to register late, but you will have to pay a fee of (at least in Blr) USD 30,-. And you may expect a "don't do this again, it is very bad and criminal" speech from the Police Commisioner. |

Similar Situation!
I am on a 1 year entry visa (x visa) without having registered and have accidently crossed the 180 day mark. I am 18 days over.
I have been told by the FRRO here in Bombay to go to either the place that the visa was issued for (Pondicherry) to normalize this OR to go to The Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi. I want to go to the correct place! Can anyone direct me? Also, I would very much like to know if the original poster's friend had crossed the 180 day mark before boarding the plane? And what was the final out come for the O.P? Any advice would be greatly appreciated ![]() |

Hi cyberbaba,
Where do you live? In Bombay or in Pondicherry? On what basis was the visa issued? For what company for example? I know of a situation where an X visa was given for a traineeship with a certain company. The company's headoffice was in Bombay and this was also mentioned in the visa. However, this girl worked for their office in Bangalore and also lived in Bangalore. When she went to the FRO in Bangalore, they told her to register in Bombay because that was what was mentioned in her visa. But after calling Bombay they told her that she had to register in Bangalore because she lived there. Finally she got a letter from the Indian embassy that issued the visa stating that she was working in Bangalore and she could do her registration in Bangalore. Maybe your case is similar? I don't see why you would have to go to Delhi at all. Hope this helps, hikkaduwa |

Hi Hikkaduwa,
Thanks for your info. I'm now living in Bombay. I was living in Pondicherry. The visa I was given was to do voluntary work (development stuff) for an organization in Pondicherry. After arriving I realized that I didn't want to be there and so the organization never gave me the paperwork so that I could get properly registered. I was told that I just had to leave before the 180 day mark..... but I overlooked the date. damn. I think I am just going to have to go back to the FFRO in Pondicherry and explain my story to them. With a smile, I'm sure they can normalize everything ![]() |

Hi Cyberbaba,
Do I understand correctly that the visa was given for working with this NGO, but you are not working with them anymore? I would not mention this because you are supposed to "stick to your visa". If anything changes, you also have to change your visa. Same that if you have an employment visa for company X and after a month you get an offer for company Y, you have to change your visa. Not saying that people always do this, but you should. On the other hand; you will need some papers from your organization for your registration and if they cannot give you this, it will be a problem as well. I believe you need to submit a contract, proof of address and a financial guarantee for your registration. Good luck in Pondi. I guess it will all depend on whom is sitting behind the counter ![]() |

Right.
I went back to Pondicherry and explained what happened to the FRRO officer in charge. He told me to come and see him 2 weeks before my visa expires and that he would normalize the visa. The fine: 1500 rupees. I was thrilled. The Pondicherry FRRO office is used to dealing with foreigners and they are extremely helpful there! Hope this helps others ![]() |

Most Foreigner's Regional Registration Offices are used to dealing with Foreigners <smug bastard smiley goes here>
![]() But I don't think Pondicherry has an FRRO (Delhi, Mumbau, Kolkata, Chennai, Amritsar). If it is an FRO, ie a job tagged on to a police station, then I gather that many of them are far from expert! My quibbles are irrelevant. Glad you are getting sorted out ![]() |
