Help! Stolen Passport EXIT VISA for UK

Hello, after having my passport stolen in Delhi I have missed my flight home. I have filled out all the forms at the british high commission and am told my new passport will be ready a week today. My problem now is with my Exit Visa to return to the uk as soon as possible. The British High Com. couldn't give me much information on what I had to do and told me that I would be able to go to the visa department without my new passport.

Does anybody have any experience with getting exit visas and know how long the procedure takes and what it involves?

many thanks for any help

See the contact addresses on this site here

If you have photocopies of your old passport and visa then take them along. If you have the disembarkation (is that the word?) form, that would be good too.

They will need to know your date and port of entry and will check up on this; if it was local, that should not take long at all. If it was another city, they will have to contact that place.

Still, it can be done in a day or two. A friend of mine came to Chennai, got an emergency travel document (rather than a full replacement passport) and got it endorsed to leave the country at the FRRO, all within a couple of days, including them contacting Bangalore, her port of entry.

(thanks Saajan I don't know that much really, )

stolen passports

I just returned from 6 months in India and met more than a few travelers who had their passport stolen. For any other travelers heading that way get a few photocopies of your passport and visa, it makes it so much easier when you have to contact your embassy to replace your stolen documents

I'm all for having copies of passport, visa page, airline tickets --- all that stuff!

Some people mail themselves a set of copies to an online account like yahoo or gmail, so that, if they loose everything, they can print it out. Pessimistic, maybe, but it's a precaution that costs nothing!

Ouch SWIL, that's a tough streak

Just a word of comfort here, wish I could help. Hope you're otherwise unscathed? I hope things will lighten up before you leave.

Maybe try buzzing some people at the Next Delhi IM Meetup??? thread, even if it's short notice.

thanks - the embassy was very understanding when confronted with a hysterical 23 year old with a bad limp (after falling off the bus to haridwar!) and helped but the hotel ajanta is actually one of THE WORST hotels i have ever been to and in case of an emergency i entirely would not recommend them at all - they sent me to a ymca in the knowledge that they would also need to see my passport and not only that tried to sell me a day trip to jaipur and agra at the same time!!!
but thanks - i will check that thread

Hi She who is lost

That is totally horrible for you. When is your emergency passport going to be ready?

When you go to FRRO office go early opens approx 9.30am closed at 3pm. First go to the reception and get your form. You will then have your counter and queue number grab a seat fill in your form and start reading the book you brought with you. Take photocopies of stolen passport, visa, new passport etc and some photos. There is a photocopy machine outside near the canteen you will also have to photocopy the form you filled in. Grab a chai to calm yourself. Head back in grab a seat nearest to your counter number they call out numbers but not very loudly.

Good luck go with the idea you will have to spend all day there and then if you don't it will be good news.

When you have finished go to the Hyatt on the corner to reward yourself the coffee shop has great cakes. Coffee is expensive.

If you get desperate for a friendly face send me a message.

Candyji

SWIL... Good luck and sorry to hear your problems. At least Candyji is able to advise from experience.

It had never occurred to me that not having a passport might mean being on the street, as one couldn't book into a hotel! That's terrible!

Wherever your passport is, even Haridwar, get a bus or a train and pick it up yourself, at least that way you know you'll have it.

Good luck.
