Help! I have a few questions ? ?
I am curently investigating about getting out of the UK and finding work in india, and there's a lot to take in. I would like to know if I am able to buy property (a house) in India. I am a british citizen and passport holder and I am not of Indian origin or related to anyone Indian. I had read and article by V Nagarajan who said that foreigners can buy built property but not land, but also read things that say the opposite. Now i'm not sure what the rule is, so I hope someone here can help? Also would it be easy for me to aquire a visa for long term stay?
Thanks G |

gioginnelli, welcome to IndiaMike
![]() If you find a job, you will be able to get an employment visa: you just need to get the paperwork, contract, letter of invitation from the company that is employing you. I suspect that this would be prety hard to do in India ---you'd have to get it sorted in your home country. There are lots of ex-pats working here. If you can give some details about what kind of work you do, your qualifications and expectations, someone may be able to tell what your chances are. Be realistic: remember you are competing against a huge population, very many of whom have brilliant academic qualifications --- and all of whom speak at least one Indian language. Now for the not so good news... Purchase of property in India by a non-indian is very hard. Suggest you read the thread about foreigners buying propery in Goa There are over 700 posts in that thread (which is now closed and a new one awaits the continuing story) which is an indication of just how thorny an issue this is. Some of it is very specific to conditions in Goa, but the law is the same (except for a few places which don;t even allow people from outside the state to buy land) throughout India. No, there is no distinction between buying property and buying land ----ah, you may be thinking of agricultural land: as a foreigner you cannot and never will qualify to buy agricultural land. Suggest, if you find the job, you content yourself with renting....
