My son has been in India for the past 6 months doing an internship. He has been offered a chance to stay for another 6 months to a year for a job that he has been offered. His tourist visa is up on the 17th of December and originally his boss told him that he could get the extension without coming back to the states. Now they have told him he must return to the US and apply for a regular work visa.
My question is: have you heard of this before? Why can he not just go to another country like Nepal and apply? How long does it usually take to get a work visa if you are not of Indian origin?(I am trying to help him get his return airfare back to India). The Indian Embassy in Chicago does not answer any of their phone extensions so that is why I am asking. Thanks for any help or tips that you can offer us! Would applying to one of those companies who expedit visas help his cause at all instead of coming all the way back to the states? Last edited by machadinha : Dec 6th, 2007 at 23:41. It is very difficult to get a tourist visa converted into any other kind of visa in India. Conversion into an employment visa is probably impossible.
Any visa applied for in a country other than the one in which the applicant is normally resident will be referred to the home country anyway. Don't know much more to help, I'm afraid.

It probably doesn't work much differently for an Indian who is offered a job while travelling in the US -- they, too, have to go back to their home country to get a visa.

Actually, that can be done in the US. Sometimes it takes years and massive legal expense. However, if the company has pull it can be done quite easily (my neice)..
