Getting a PIO card
Getting a PIO card
Hello,
I am of Indian origin. My great grandparents were from india and I was born in Guyana. I am currently a permanent resident of Canada (and will be a citizen soon). Am I eligible for PIO status? If so, what are the steps to obtain such a status nd what documents do I need?
Thank you.

If your are of Indian origin why wouldn't you apply for a OCI instead of a PIO card?

but if his grandparents were from India at some point, wouldn't that make him eligible?

Were your great-grandparents Indian citizens?? According to this:
1. Who is eligible to apply?
Any foreign national,
who was eligible to become citizen of India on 26.01.1950 or was a citizen of India on or at anytime after 26.01.1950 or belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947, and;
his/her children and grand children, and;
provided his/her country of citizenship allows dual
citizenship in some form or other under the local laws,
Minor children of such person are also eligible for OCI.
However, if the applicant had ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, he/she will not be eligible for OCI.

Because he is a grandchild he is eligible.

Great-grandparents makes him a great-grandchild, not a grandchild. To be a grandchild, your own parents parents are the grandparents. I think not eligible, but always best to check out directly with issuing authorities - in other words the nearest Indian High Commission in your country.
Every cloud has a silver lining!
