Question Forgot to register (V-Visa)

I have a one year visa. I don't exactly know if it is a Tourist Visa or something different. The Visa Nr begins with an V. Does that stand for Volunteer?
And on the bottom it says Internship at Deepalaya (The NGO I'm working for volunteerly for one year, no salary so no text, no workingvisa?)
It also says that I should register at the foreign registration office within 14 days of arrival if I stay longer than half a year.
I forgot to do that. What will happen if I leave the country? I read something about late registration fine (1500Rs). I also want to go to Nepal and return to India with the same visa.
Is it possible? Or will I say hello to an Indian jail?
Hope I described everything clearly enough.
Thx for your help.

The visa number is just a number. There should be a part where it says 'visa type' (T for tourist, etc). You are supposed to register if you stay for longer than 180 days on any single stay, so as long as you go to Nepal (or anywhere else!) within 180 days of the arrival date stamped in your passport, you are sweet as! As long as you have a multiple enty visa of course!

I know that I could just leave the country within 180 days but I have already overstayed those 180 days.

I don't know what will happen but I do know that they certainly will want to see your registration papers when you leave the country. Have the people where you stay or your landlord at least filled out a C Form for you? It's also a police registration although a different kind but it might help a bit if you can produce that C Form at least.

And: you can only enter with the same visa twice if it says "multiple entry" somewhere.

I think you could have problems Sebbagoe - you should have registered within the 180 day period. Maybe contact your embassy, see what they suggest. If your category is Student, Employment,Research or Missionary then you should have registered within 14 days. If you are a few days over the 180 I would fast go to your nearest FRO office.Maybe with a lot of bowing and scraping they might be lenient??
I have just re-read your post - I see there may be a possibility of a late fee? Well go and do it fast!

Aishah gave you good advice.

But if it takes you more than a week to just have a look at your passport to check the type, I don't have much hope for you ...

Just go to the FRRO and grovel. Oversight, didn't realise, very anxious to regularise the situation (a good bit of jargon).

You'll likely end up paying some sort of fine.

Takes a while but in the end everything is fine:

I first went to the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi (Man Singh Road). There I met like 200 other people with Visa Problems. It was a real Indian bureaucracy experience. First you have to queue for a token and show up your passport. Then you have to wait till they call your token and your forwarded to an office where you have to fill out a form and make a copy of your passport and visa.
Then the most different part comes (which in my case wasn't really different). After again waiting for an hour your case is handled by one of the clerks. He first didn't see my problem so I explained and then he asked me three times why I didn't register. My answer was the same all times: I forgot. But it was good to mix some sorries in your little speech. They treat you like a criminal without respect but in the end I got my letter (which you are not allowed to open! I dunno why).
With that letter I went to the FRO. There they wanted a letter from my NGO again and proof of your residence, which I don't have till now.
I will end up paying a fine of 1395Rs and be able to leave the country.

After all the long waiting times were quite interesting cause I met people from all over the world, some have been going there for one month now.
So I'm happy that they solved my case "so" fast.

I´m glad that you were able to solve your problem, sebbagoe!

Nevertheless, I want to share my recent (2 weeks ago) experience at Mumbai airport when I left India. At Immigration they only had a quick look at my passport and didn´t even ask for the registration papers. I was quite surprised.

I guess it all depends on the officer´s mood ...

Same happened to me while coming back from Nepal. The obviously new guy there (he wanted to know how we like india and all that stuff and was friendly...) didn't know what to do with my registration papers.
But I needed them while leaving India.

I was never able to register twice on extended stays (though not a tourist visa). Wasn't asked on departure, just got lucky I suppose..

Was just the other way round with me. Didn't need them while going but when I came back the officer asked to see the registration papers.

My registration has been extended multiple times. There are so many stamps on the back of it that the sheet is full now.
