How long does it take? I put my application in last December 2008. I'm in Ahmedabad, deposited the application for extension through Gandhinagar (state capital) to Delhi... still waiting. From other threads it seems if you can get to Delhi directly, as I was advised as an alternative to allowing the local authorities to 'help' and process the application on your behalf, then you may (note that I said 'may', not 'can'!) get the extension in person in Delhi in anywhere from 2-5 days at the Ministry of Home Affairs. All that having been said - I'm off back to the UK in December to get an extension done directly... or alternatively put in for a PIO (wife is local) which avoids all the yearly renewal hassles... not sure yet, given the PIO processing in UK apparently takes 1 week - 2 months depending on circumstances.

Don't do it here Pls. look for another thread or 2 on extending an employment visa. It either takes 9 months or it never comes. One poster did go to MHA in Delhi, found his paperwork and got one (but he worked for an NGO, maybe volunteered, actually). Another guy got one when his wife got her emp'y visa extended (I think he paid 38,000 to a fixer--it still took several weeks). Out of my 3 colleagues, one actually got his last week--I believe he applied for it back in Dec. The other 2, after waiting sev'l months, gave up and got an exit/re-entry visa, went home and got a BRAND NEW visa there (one of them was flat out told last week that it could take up to a year to get the extension in India--so what's the point, and if you need to leave the country for an emergency, you can't even get the exit-re-entry visa without a plane ticket!). Even if your company says they'll help you, it's Delhi that seems to be the problem, not your local FRRO.

But... can't you just carry on as normal while it is under consideration?
