Domestic Travel in India

What are the requirements for domestic travel in India?

Do we need a passport or other picture ID? Would a California Drivers License be okay? I am consdering leaving our passports in Delhi while we travel so we don't lose them somewhere in the backwaters of Kerala. We would take photocopies instead.

Thanks for any info.

Iqbal

As everywhere - bring your passports and keep them. That is also where your visa is posted.
If you loose the passports find the nearest consulate of your country.
As I normally say:
remember tickets, money and passport - if you only want to remember one thing, then money can get you new tickets and to the nearest point of getting a new passport.

If you book a rail ricket under the Tatkal scheme, you will need a photo-identity at the time of booking and also the same photo-identity during the journey.

If you use a GSM cellphone in India, you will need a photo-identity before you are issued a SIM card.

Your passport is the most important document in a foreign land and must always be carried on your person in a safe place.

I was told it wasn't, but I'm not so sure.

Well steven,

I haven't come across anywhere which says it is not applicable to foreigners, so I am assuming it is.

Tatkal (emergency) scheme is available for all. The rules are same as the other reservation except that it can’t be cancelled. You need to book it personally with any photo ID card. Credit card with photo is sufficient.

Some hotels may ask for passport and keep a copy. I’m not sure if this is based on some government directive. Carry a few photocopies and you can avoid leaving the passport with them to get photocopied.
