Documents when leaving India

I wonder what kind of documents will they ask at the airport when I am leaving from India.
I have a student visa for 9 months. stayed in delhi for 6 months and did register with frro in delhi. now, I am living in raipur and do not have anymore my room in delhi. what do the officer want to see when I am leaving? I am registered with the university in delhi only till end of July, but will leave end of August. The frro-booklet sais I am allowed to stay in India till end of August. Do I need some sort of certificate that I can leave India?
I am getting confused...

Not that I am aware of.

Your stay has been legal, you have not over-stayed you visa; you are free just to get on a plane and go!

You are supposed to hand in your Resident's Permit on your final departure from India (ie if you are leaving temporarily you don't have to give it up and re-register), so if you are not coming back on the same visa you should do so.

Usual disclaimer: I am not an expert or a professional

As long as you have an entrance stamp in your passport there shouldn't be any problems...

Although I am not sure whether you have to go to FRRO before and tell them that you are leaving... I think you have to... at least that's what I did.

Frederica, may I ask what kind of visa you had? tourist or other? and very important for me: what did the frro wanted to know when you asked for the exit permit? any documents?

Are people out there who had a resident permit and left india without going to frro and getting an exit stamp?

I am still a bit worried, because I left my registered address in delhi without telling it to frro. I won't stay more than 8 weeks at the same place (raipur; and I do not stay in a hotel here) though...

Do landlords need to tell someone that a lessee left the apartment? because then frro maybe knows that I left Delhi without telling anything to them...

hmm... should I relax and stop worrying??
all comments welcome..

I was on a business visa. Before leaving I went to the FRRO. I needed an extended exit permit for leaving 4 days after the expiry date of my visa, so I really had to go there. I am sorry that I can't give you the exact details anymore, it was almost two years ago... I think I gave my residence permit back and got some papers (exit permit??). These papers I had to give to the police at the airport.

Can't you go to the FRRO in Delhi and give your residence permit back before you are leaving (see Nick's post)? I am at least 90% sure that you have to do this unless you are not coming back on the same visa....

You are supposed to surrender your resident's permit on your final departure from India.

Which raises the question... unless it is about to expire anyway, how would they know you weren't coming back?!

You will get an exit stamp on your passport like everybody else: once, the guy asked for my RP and stamped that as well (he didn't notice it was a photocopy ).

I always thought that one would hand the RP in to the officer at the airport, if giving it up --- I hadn't thought about visiting the FRRO to do so! Just my idea; anyone tried this? (also, again, my point: how would they know you are not coming back?)

Your Delhi landlord has probably never even heard of FRRO and RP. He probably knows more about USA or UK immigration law than he does about his own country's. We seldom need to learn about our own country's rules! Don't worry about that at all!

Thx for the comments.

I guess I should have added that I will not come back on the same visa. It is expiring one day after I will have left the country.

So, I guess I will not go to the frro and head directly to the airport and board my flight.

Thx again.

Hm... in Trivandrum we had frequent police checks in our office (where we were registered). I really don't have an idea what would have happened if they were told that one of us two foreigners had already left the country...

Ok, they don't know whether you are coming back... but we were told that whenever we even leave the state (!) we have to report it to the FRRO... after some queries (my colleague had to travel all the time) they said "ok, only if it is for more than 4 weeks..."

Delhi is surely different, as a big city with lots of foreigners and not such a personal contact to the FRRO officer.

Maybe you'll end up in the statistics of the 10 000 foreigners from developed countries missing in India (you can search here on IM for this thread)

Seriously, I hope everything goes well...

Nick, do you have to extend your residence permit from time to time?

It got extended to fiver years when I got my PIO, which I thought was great.

Then I heard some other people got 15 yr extensions with their PIOs!

Yes... when it expires, I'll have to extend/renew it.

so I guess as long as one has no PIO status he will get only a one year permit?! Unless someone with a 1 year visa who is not really sure that he will return to the same place in India can also give the RP back... there wouldn't be any difference as it would expire anyway...

Well, before, I had a one-year visa, so they would not have given me a longer permit. I think that they often give a permit to be co-terminus with the visa --- but these guys will do whatever they feel like on the day!

Of course, not everyone who has a long-term visa is living here for the full time. So it may depend on circumstances too.

Hi everyone... me again...

People said that I do not need any additional papers (except the resident permit), but now I was surfing on the DelhiAirport webpage and I found this:
"Income-Tax Clearance Certificate: You will need this at the time of departure if your stay in India exceeds 120 days...".

I did not work in India, earned no money. Do I still have to get this? If yes, how long will that take?

Thx for any ideas

Nobody asks for that.

I am an Indian who has flown out countless times; not once.

An Indian working in India and leaving (for work abroad?) is required to have this document, however. Don't know how many actually do this.

I think that this tax-clearance thing is old and out of date.

Try doing a search of this forum, a maybe even a web-wide google: I think it has been superseded.
