Yep, that is right some hard currency, pounds sterling, etc. Have heard of one case where overland they accepted Rupees. Make a deal with another traveler. Would be a shame to rest one's hopes on one instance..

Updating a bit the visa is 40 USD or the equivalent in a hard currency like Euros but note the change problem. No INR generally are accepted although you can use these in Nepal in cities.

As above no train except up to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, India. Then the long but beautiful bus up.

Lots of people get Indian visas in Nepal. Its when people go for the multiple reups out of home country that they crack down. So far as I have heard that means they give 3 months instead of 6 for example..

Visa for Nepal.

My husband and I are considering flying to Nepal from Bangalore (via Delhi) early November. We have just realised that we need to obtain visa's and would like to know if it is still possible to get them at the airport in Kathmandu? We are both Australians with Indian residence permits (my husband is working in India).

Yes, it is still possible. Be sure to carry USD for the visa fees. Passport photos are recommended if you don't want the hassle of getting them on arrival at the airport.

Conveniently, Indian rupees are legal tender throughout Nepal, though you will get your change back in Nepalese currency which are worth less so make sure you know the exchange rate and remain alert they give you the correct amount back. (You might even get back a mix of Indian and Nepalese currency which is exponentially more fun.)

* However, Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 Indian currency bills are illegal in Nepal due to a high prevalence of counterfeiting and may be confiscated on arrival. *

Thanks Rotar for the information. I didn't want to book our flights and accommodation only to find we needed to race out and find a Nepalese embassy to get visa's. Getting them at the airport in Kathmandu sounds ideal and we will definitely take some US$.

That right if you have a regular tourist visa without reentry permit.

If you have not applied for a visa then submit an itinerary along with the application and ask for reentry permission. You will get it and then you are good to go.
