nicky,

I read your post earlier but didn't bother replying as I agreed with a lot of what other people had said. It sounded like incompetence rather than dishonesty.

But then I thought 100 euros?

The Indian Embassy, Dublin website states that the price for a 15 day transit visa is 24 euros, and for a 6-month tourist visa is 50 euros. And there is an additional fee of 50 euros if the visa is to be issued at short notice on the same day.

So it seems that your daughter was charged for (and given?) a 6 month tourist visa. If she had only asked for the 15 day transit visa then there is some reason to feel annoyed but the difference is only 26 euro, not a huge deal.

As for the 50 euro express visa fee, it's there in black and white on the website: if one requires a visa at short notice then that fee will be charged. The staff would not have had the option to waive that fee. It obviously could have been avoided by applying for the visa earlier.

sorry if I sound harsh but I really think it's unfair that the staff here are being called dishonest even in the thread title.

Another thing - I vaguely remember a story here a while ago of someone who had a stopover in India of a few hours and didn't have any sort of visa but then the incoming plane was delayed and they missed the connection, and there wasn't another plane out for at least a day and they were stuck in a sort of limbo with no visa of any sort for India. Maybe the staff advised your daughter to have a visa to be on the safe side and to avoid this sort of situation.

i agree - it was not dishonesty, more like misinformation and lack of correct training of the personnel in the department. however, it must be noted - many people have had trouble transiting through IGIA (and other Indian airports), the 'no requirement for a transit visa' rule is rather vague at best in India's context. obviously logic would dictate that if you were simply changing flights you wouldn't need one (an airport not really being a country - till you passed through immigration and 'entered' it).

Then suggest that the embassy make a donation of Euros 100( or any amount) to this charity, or perhaps a charity in India, so your kids do not get cynical from this experience.
Excellent idea!

If OP is interested in this plan, he/she may want to write to the Ambassador (P S Raghaban as per the link below). From the main page sidebar the address for snail mail is :

6, Leeson Park,Dublin 6
