Hi there - quick visa question and was wondering if anyone had a similar experience and might know the answer.
I live in Japan but am a NZ national. Looks like my wife will be offered a job in India and I'll tag along as a spouse to begin with under the X-visa. Worryingly, the material I have seen on applying for my X-visa suggests that I have to return to my country of origin (NZ) to apply for my X-visa. Also, If I get to India and am able to switch to a employment or business visa, the material I've read suggests I'd have to apply for it in my port of origin (Japan). Does anyone know if this is so? Going back to NZ from to Japan is a giant leap backwards, literally... Thanks! |

Hajime mashite.
Don't know the answers but there is a member Hoshii2000 who's case sounds similar to yours. Originally Kiwi, moved to Bangalore via Japan. Kampai!

Domo Indojingai. Found the user, but not the thread you might be referring to. (Seems he's not a kiwi but that might not matter.) Care to post the thread?

If Japan is your country of residence, that's good enough, you do not have to go bck to NZ. Worst case, if a junior-level official gets sticky about this, ask to speak further up the line.
If you move to India and then get employment, where do you apply for the employment visa - that's your 2nd Q, right? You don't have to go to Japan specifically, you cud get it done in Wellington. |

Thanks Dilliwala, just saw your post. So if I can get my X-Visa in Japan and then later in India I find a way to get an employment visa, you think I will still need to go back to NZ?

Hmm, generally you have to leave the country, but if you're already here on an X-visa you cud ask for exemption. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Yeah, guess not. I wonder, when dealing with the bureaucracy in Japan, it helps to have a senior business person/professional helping you smooth the path, even if it's just coming to the counter when you're dealing with official-dom. Even helps with banks, if you have a mildly tricky request, (like transferring money overseas). Is it the same in India? Good to have an ojiisan in your court?
