Converting X visa to student visa
Hi,
My wife has a X visa which was extended couple of months back for second time for one year. Now she got admission for the Phd program in university.University is saying they need to have a student visa for that & the current X visa is unacceptable. What I want to know is does she have to go back to her country to apply for student visa or she can do it in Delhi because Mumbai FRRO is saying that they cannot do it. Also the current X visa where will it be cancelled? Here in India or in the Indian embassy in her home country. |

ayamas, are you Indian? If so, a PIO card for your wife would be a solution to all problems, allowing her to work, study, and forget all about visas for fifteen years.
A person is not supposed to have two current visas; if she gets a new one, the old one should be cancelled. Apart from that, I can't help. I'm just surprised that they will not do a student visa here for someone who is resident here on an X visa. <later> Go for the PIO! |

Thanks for your reply.
But getting the student visa is some what like changing the visa category which I heard almost impossible from the threads that I read on this forum.I guess you also had the same problems when changing it here in India. Apart from that where will her current visa will be cancelled the Frro or in her home country. Also applying for PIO will take sometime because FRRO are saying have to goto Delhi because Mumbai FRRO cannot do for her nationality. The university needs the student visa urgently in about a month. |

Cancellation of previous visa... it ceases to be valid when a new one is issued, so where, or whether they notice/remember and stamp it cancelled doesn't really matter, but they should do this when the next visa is issued. |

No, you don't "get it cancelled", it gets cancelled when a new visa is issued.
Remember that she needs to have a valid visa to leave India. |

You can but try.
Unfortunately, it is rather a long way to go to do the trying. My experience of how FRROs work is that what they can't handle themselves, they pass to Delhi. |

I have no idea. I got my first X visa back in London in just a few minutes, whereas an agent in Chennai had been screwing up on it for months.
I had to be back there anyway, as it happened |

X visa to student visa
This is in continuation of this thread
Converting X visa to student visa Atlast my wife decided to go back to her country to get the student visa because in Delhi they have now invented a new rule. Now even X visa cannot be converted to any other type of visa not to mention it is not at all mentioned in any of the great Indian governments websites. Now she has got a provisional student visa for 6 months & also mentioned on it is all that crap of registering within 14 days of arrival.I thought that it was necessary to register if visa is valid for more than 6 months.Damn all this Indian bureaucracy. |

Sorry I dint know that.
Anyways I still have one query. The Indian embassy did not put any cancellation stamp on her valid X visa my wife was holding before issuing her a new student visa. Will that be a problem??? |
