Just wondering. i have a friend who got married to an indian citizen. She is an australian citizen. before the marriage she took a 6mth visa (which is the max time given to an australian citizen). would she be eligible for dual citizenship. i really don't know how the law works in india in relation to citizenship after marriage. for australian citizens, what would be the best course of action

I would check with your local Indian embassy. India has been slowly moving towards dual citizenships. Too slow for some of us. It usually has to to with approved countries and I would imagine Australia would be on such a list. But check with the embassy and they should be able to advice you.

She would not be eligable for Citizenship on that basis until she has been an Indian resident for five years.
Dual Citizenship is something being evolved right now and seems to be subject to false starts. It is, I think, for people who were born Indian, but renounced their Indian citizenship to become citizens of other countries. She would be eligable for a PIO card, which means she won't have to worry about visas ...for a long time! Further Information Links: How to become an Indian Citizen PIO Cards and other visa stuff (see the FAQ page for PIO eligability

also check for any male/female discrimination.
nepal and i think sri lanka as well discriminate against their women in the sense that if a nepali man marries a non-nepali woman, she will easily get the nepali citizenship and so will the children. if, however, a nepali woman marries a foreign man (i was once in a situation where i was thinking abt marrying a nepali in pokhara, that's how i know), he will not get the citizenship and even children born in such a marriage will not (or at least they will have huge problems), even if they were born and live in nepal. india being a secular country, unlike the hindu nepal, may not have gender discrimination, but you never know. just look what all they allow the muslims - poligamy, that stupid "talaq" divorce thing etc. anyway, best of luck to your friend and nick as well ![]() |

i agree its asia-pacific region.however u might be aware that the migration (specifically long term stay) and spouse rules differ. My friend was pretty much scared that if she overstayed she might get entangled in some bureaucratic nonsense. everywhere the rules keep changing, and it took quite a while for her to get adjusted. see most of her immediate family lives overseas (not in india).
