Carry old visa with new passport?

Hi

Not a new thread so may I ask, this advice still valid? i.e. that you can travel on a visa in an old passport? (provided you bring the new passport too of course )

I'm running out of passport pages so I'm getting a new passport during a trip home to the UK.

I travelled a few times over a few years with a valid visa in old (expired) passport and new passport without problems. Usually the immigration + airline staff complained a bit but they let me through. (I usually told them I was going to get the visa transferred across 'soon'!)

Why not add extra pages ? But valid visa in an old/cancelled passport along with a new passport is still valid.

You can't 't get extra pages added to a British passport, like you can with other countries' passports.

Hello all. I am wanting to get more up to date info on this subject. I leave for India in 10 weeks. I will be there until April the 20th. My current passport expires on May the 3rd and my Indian Tourist visa still has 9 years on it. I’m in a pickle here. I can expedite the passport renewal but will be left with my visa in my old passport. Can I still travel? Should I just leave it be until I get back? My reasoning is this – I will have a 9 hour layover in Frankfurt and would love to get out and see Frankfurt a bit but I’ve read that Germany requires at least 6 months valid in order to enter. So I could leave it all alone and potentially be stuck in the airport all day, or I could risk it and get my new passport and be rejected everywhere. I’m new to international travel and a single dad who CANNOT afford to get stuck somewhere or be returned and have wasted all the airfare. Advice please. This is a great site and a great forum to new travelers like me. Thank you.

As you are planning to do, it would be a good idea to renew your Passport.

Then for your travel to India you would be OK to carry your new passport AND your old passport with the Indian Visa sticker.

PS - India is priority. That is my destination whereas Germany is just a layover and I thought I'd get out and see some sights.

Thanks so much for your quick reply. Let me ask you this. If I left it as is (expiring on May 3rd) I won't have any problems in India due to not having 6 months valid would I? What about just passing through Frankfurt? When I'm changing plans can they give me crap because it expires so soon?

This is what the official site of the German Foreign Ministry says: So "should" and not "must" - this means in German officialese that it is upto the discretion of the immigration official to let you through. And remember you are carrying an American passport. These people have heard all about CARE packages and the Berlin Airlift from their grandparents.

Thanks Golghar. I've spent the day on this and I think you are right and the "safest bet" would be to go ahead and renew my passport (in a hurry). At that point I can assess if there is enough time to transfer the the visa and if not just travel with both passports. Thanks for your help.

I have traveled to places within weeks of my passport due to expire without problems. Since you are back home April 20th, and passport is valid till May 3rd. You should be fine. On the Other Hand, you could always get an expedite renewal for major bucks
