Can an American get a 5 or 10 year visa anywhere in Europe/Asia?

Hi all,

I'm an American currently travelling (very) long-term, and I'm now planning to come to India soon... based on my experiences in India on past (business) trips, I'm expecting to make many repeat trips to the country over the years, so I would like to get the 5- or 10-year tourist visa and avoid having to keep getting repeated 6-month visas.

I'll be in Turkey soon, so I was thinking of getting the visa there, but (in addition to all the other hassles there) they don't seem to give more than 6 months. I've looked into some other countries I might visit before India - same deal, Americans applying don't seem to get more than 6 months.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get the longer-term visas in Europe or Asia? (My plans change by the day, and right now anywhere on these continents is a place I might theoretically visit in the next month or two... ) For that matter, does anyone have personal experience or otherwise know of Americans getting 5- or 10-year Indian visas anywhere outside the US?

Thanks...

I telephoned the company which handles visa applications for the Indian Embassy in Japan and was told that there was absolutely no such thing as a 10 year visa for Americans. Fortunately, I had to visit New York and was able to get my 10 year visa there without any hassle.
My experience in Japan may be an isolated case where the person answering the telephone didn't know about visas for Americans and couldn't be bothered to check, but I would certainly telephone ahead to confirm whether your 10 year visa application will be accepted. Even better would be to apply for it in the US.
Good luck!

It is very unlikely that you would get a 10 year visa for India in Istanbul,Turkey (this is based on '07 data) - I dunno about Ankara,Turkey.

My understanding is that long term tourist visas for Americans are not available abroad, only in their own country. If applying elsewhere, they'll only get the same as the rest of us i.e. usually no more than six months.
