Business Visa for Representing Non-Indian Companies?

I've picked over the various threads on business visas on this website, and found a lot of interesting information. But there is one point that seems to elude me, maybe because it's so basic that nobody bothers to ask, or maybe because nobody ever considered this angle.

Does one have to be a representative of a company registered in India in order to get a business visa, or can it be just as easily obtained by being a representative of an overseas company? My instincts tell me that it has to be an Indian company, but I don't see anything on the forums or on the consular website that states that specifically. Can anybody advise?

if your company has any connection or links with any Indian company they'll gladly give you a 'letter of invitation', which can be used for Business visa. However incase you are coming to India to explore business and you don't have an Indian company to give to 'Letter of Invitation'. I'll advice you to go for a tourist visa. It would be simpler and you can easyly go around doing your work.
