Australian national. Visa advice?
Hey i'm an Aussie in Candada arriving in Delhi approximately June 4. Just have some questions regarding visa applications.
1. Do i need a visa to just travel? 2. I might be looking for some volunteer work or even paid work at some point. Is it wise to organise the visa before arrival or is it easy to arrange on site? 3. Is residency easily acheived if I need to apply? Any general advice on the subject is also welcome. Thanks for your time |

Jimmy,
Some brief answers, others will no doubt elaborate? 1)If you plan to leave the "in-transit" part of the airport, Yes 2)Not sure about volunteer work, but paid, Yes. And they are not easy to get and they are expensive. And you usually have to apply in your country of residence (not necessarily origin) 3) No. It is very, very difficult. For general advice, read the threads on this forum, do a search, do some research. Thats what its here for! Good Luck J5 |

You'll need to apply for a tourist visa - and you should be granted a multiple entry visa valid for six months from date of granting (traps for the unwary in there!!)
Paid work without the appropriate visa could be dodgy - and it's difficult to get a work visa (your prospective employer has to prove no Indian can do what you do). There are a number of threads in the Forum on residency and visa issues generally. If you scroll down to the bottom of this page you'll find several suggested by the Forum! |

If you're going to be in India for a while don't apply for the visa just yet. They start running down from date of issue. Employment or business visas cost a lot - $250-300 for 6 months.

Please check your status re applying for ANY visa whilst not in your own country.
In the UK, if you do not have some form of permanent permission to stay, residency of over 12 months must be proved. Is it the same from Canada? India is not an easy place for visas, so do your "finding out" now so you can deal with any problems, but as Hal says, do not apply till nearer departure, allowing for being jerked around at the last minute. |

Add to the list above, another one that I was told about last week.
Apparently, your passport must now have 12 months validity from the date you leave India. I've yet to confirm this, but it was told to me by my travel agent and I have little reason to doubt her. Cheers Zoltan
