Applying for Indian Visa from USA
What do you put for an answer on the Visa application where it says list a reference in India? I assume you can put the place where you are staying but what do you put if you have no place booked to stay?

Any place will do. I usually just list a fancy tourist hotel in the city in which I plan to dis-embark. No one will be checking on you.

consider a long term visa
Depending on the age of your passport (how many years left), please consider a 5 or 10 year multiple entry visa. Not only is it a good value when compared to single/double entry visas, but it is one less thing to think about in the future when you want to travel to Nepal, Sri Lanka, etc. and transit thru India on subsequent trips.
