It should only be used for something that is genuinely not applicable (e.g. husband's name if you are not married) if you do have something to write in that field it is FAR better to do that than to leave any fields "blank".

should i just make up referee's and possible hotels then ?

cheers

Put hotels down as Indian referees, use friends as UK referees.

As long as I don't have to write it in welsh we will be o.k. Haylo - only taking the mick out of you about opening in Cardiff. It will certainly be more convenient and cheaper for us to go to Cardiff instead of London.

We are travelling a month tomorrow and I didn't even know we needed a visa until after we had booked the flights. We are going to a friend's wedding and he didn't mention anything about it.

So.... I located the applications online. Discovered that there was no real guidance as to how to complete them. For instance, was a referee actually a referee or a person to be contacted in case of emergency???? I finaly completed hand written applications and sent them off. My husband, throughout the whole process was of little help, saying 'they'll be fine....'

These came back to me because a) i had sent a cheque not a postal order (simple error on my part - but who doesn't accept cheques!!), I hadn't put tele numbers for my referees in UK (no room!!) and get this.... 'signature on application must be as per passport'. This caused no end of arguments between me and my husband who scrutinised my signatures and found that my C was slightly curlier on the application. They were the same. Short of photocopying them, they were the same.

Anyway, rather than send them back again, I thought best to go to Birmingham so that we could sign them there and then if needed. So I completed the online applications (which seemed to take forever) and then booked an appointment for my husband, then for me.

As i was booking my appointment, I noticed that I could download an appointment letter, which i did. My appointment had been scheduled for 10am, which was the time that we were hoping for as he neded to be back home to have his jabs that afternoon. I then went back to download this letter for my husband and discovered that his was at 8.30. This, considering that we were travelling from Sheffield, was too early, so I decided to change his appointment.

I then couldn't re-arrange it for the same day. Thinking it was just some quirk to the site, I made his appointment for the day before with the view that I could rearrange it for the next day again. I couldn't. Both the day of my appointment and the day before were now blocked out. So, I went to cancel the appointment, thinking that I could then arrange another from scratch again. I couldn't. 'Cancelled appointments cannot be rescheduled'. ARRRGGGHHH.

I was a in a bit of a panic by now, so i called the premium number (bearing in mind I had already spent about £9 on it earlier trying to sort out the whole signature thing to which the lady just said 'make an appoinment', which I couldn't do on the phone). Anyway, this time, the lady at the other end told me it was fine, we could both make the applications on my appointment. I calmed down!

We then drove to Birmingham (having gotten up at 5.30 am), and now they have an office in Machester??!!. Turned up, 20 mins early. Waited for 5 mins max. Went to a counter. Handed the lady the application..... and there done. No problems. All that worry for nothing. I asked her about the signature issue and even she looked puzzled and said, 'they're the same'!!

It's such shame, the website and premium number cause so much confusion and stress, but going to the actual place to make the application is so easy! I must admit, if I hadn't booked the flights and if we were'nt going to a friend's wedding, there was a chance that I'd have given up on the first rejection. However, I am very glad that I didn't. I am so looking forward to the trip.

Is this experience normal? Am I the only one to get so worked up over it??!!!

Sorry to say that most of your worry and trauma are of your own doing.

You didn't know you needed a visa, and your friend didn't tell you - whose fault is that?

You thought you could pay by cheque - where dod you read that...it's certainly not on the site?

You panicked because you could not change the appointment time? Did you not read the part where it says appointments are optional, and that you can just attend one of the centres and queue up to hand in your application?

You obviously did not read the website properly.

Granted, the system is far from perfect, and the signature issue can be frustrating - but your frustration was due in large part to your own ignorance, and crucially your failure to read the website properly before filling in your forms.

Is this normal? Not really, it happens very infrequently these days. Of late the vast majority of experiences related on here are primarly positive.

Re: Help

Thanks, I will go down there and explain - I'm sure it can be sorted out fairly easily.

HCI never (at least in the last decade) accepted cheques. It was cash, or, I think, Postal Orders --- those archaic things that aunts used to use to send us 7/6 on our birthdays!

Coo, I only used to get 2/6 from my aunts - but that was the price of a paperback so I guess that's not too shabby!

Sorry I have no idea how to do the whole multi quote thing but this is in reply to asmithee's post

Sorry to say that most of your worry and trauma are of your own doing.

Yes, maybe, but I do think that the process could have been made easier.

You didn't know you needed a visa, and your friend didn't tell you - whose fault is that?

Mine, obviously. I didn't suggest it was anyone elses fault. I was just trying to explain my situation, in that I had already spent £600 on flights before making the application, which added to the pressure of getting it right.

You thought you could pay by cheque - where dod you read that...it's certainly not on the site?

I didn't, hence I knew it was a simple error on my part. Haylo has also picked up on this point. True, most retailers don't accept cheques, but when making a postal application I do find that cheques are the norm over postal orders. I'm quite sure that I used a cheque when making my passport application.

You panicked because you could not change the appointment time? Did you not read the part where it says appointments are optional, and that you can just attend one of the centres and queue up to hand in your application?

No - where is this? Again it is a shame that the website isn't clearer. Also, when I first spoke to someone at VFS-Global, re the signature issue, I was told that I could always go to the Birmingham office, but I would need to make an appointment, which I would have to do by making an online application. She didn't tell me that I could just turn up.

You obviously did not read the website properly.

Ok...?!

Granted, the system is far from perfect, and the signature issue can be frustrating - but your frustration was due in large part to your own ignorance, and crucially your failure to read the website properly before filling in your forms.

I read and re-read the website. I don't appreciate you calling me ignorant, simply because I have had difficulties completing this application.

Is this normal? Not really, it happens very infrequently these days. Of late the vast majority of experiences related on here are primarly positive.

Good. I am glad that people have found the whole process easier that I did! I had a positive response dealing with the Birmingham office direct. I just think that the information provided on the website and over the phone could have been clearer.

I am just detailing my experience. I have never been to India before, sorry! I therefore will be very 'ignorant' as to the whole application. I think that if VFS-Global are providing a service which is as good as you say it is, then this is seriously let down by the information provided on the website and over the phone. Thank you for your help.

I appear to have hit a nerve in my critism of the service. Do you work for VFS-Global?

To quote part of a post, click the red "quote" button in the bottom right corner of that post, and delete the words you don't want between
and
.

To quote additional sentences, highlight the text to be quoted, then click the "quote" button immediately above the text box, it's second from the right and it looks like a speech bubble with lines in it. That will automatically write the
and
at the beginning and end for you.

In other words, if you type
Blah blah blah...
you will get
Quote:
Blah blah blah...
To do this manually, type
in front of the text to be quoted and type
after it. It's always a good idea to hit "Preview post" to check you've got it right!

To quote more than one post, click the "99" quote mark to the bottom right of each post to be quoted, then hit reply.

Whoa! Looks like Haylo has discovered the NOPARSE tag!

Welcome to Advanced Poster Status!

Claret, if you read some more of this thread, you'd probably find most of your issues covered --- and you'd also find multiple clues to Asmithee's "real life" job

I too have little patience for software or websites that are easy to break, or that won't accept obvious, normal, things like dates in different format, hyphens in names, etc etc etc. The first test for any software should be to type rubbish in all the fields and see how it behaves! Regrettably, though, there is a lot of it about, especially in web development. How about the fact that all credit card numbers are in the format nnnn nnnn nnnn nnnn but trading sites expect one to enter nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn? That's life!

Hope the trip makes all this worthwhile
