Applying for an Indian Tourist Visa in Kuala Lumpur

Hello everyone, there is not a lot of information on this here. Having recently gone through this procedure, I thought I'd share it with you as it can be quite confusing.

Firstly, the visa process has been outsourced to a company called 'Grandlotus', don't bother going to the Embassy. Secondly, be aware that the address details on the Indian embassy website are incorrect. Grandlotus is located just near central/market and Chinatown. Google (maps) this address:-

NO.2, LEBUH PASAR BESAR, 50050 KUALA LUMPUR.

The nearest railway stop is Masjid Jamek. From there you can walk down and hug the river, until you come to a main road, if your facing away from the train station (Masjid Jamek), you should climb some stairs and continue on your right. Then cross the bridge and Grandlotus is just past a Seven 11.

From Chinatown, you should walk up Jalan Tun H S Lee (street), and then turn onto Lebuh Pasar Besar and walk down until you cross the bridge over the river. Grantlotus is just past the Seven 11 on the right hand side.


On arrival to the office, you are requested to fill in the application form and supply two passport photos (before 3PM). A charge of 48.00 RM is issued with every application (for tourist visa).

Once you have filled in the documents*, you take the two photos back to front desk and have them stapled together, then you wait until your number is called from the back desk. They will need to photocopy your passport, but you are free to retain it thereafter. They will issue you with a reference number that you will need to search for on their website.

After a couple of days your online reference will appear with a date next to it (clearance date). This date is the date you need to return with your passport and another 152.00 RM. Do this before 2PM (yes it is wrong on their website). The next day you should be able to pick up your visa and passport (between 4.30 - 5.30 PM).


They are open monday to friday, so don't forget weekends are not included in visa processing times. Overall costs of tourist visa are as follows:-

200.00 MYR
2000.00 (approx) BHT
38.00 GBP
80.00 AUD

This was done as a British citizen holding a British passport. As usual you're passport will need to have validity. I think the visa starts from when it is granted, not when you enter the country. I requested multi-entry visa at no added cost. Hope this helps for those interested in doing it from KL.


* On the application form, they request addresses/references in India. They will NOT accept your application unless you satisfy this. I just found out three hotels (with 'the manager' for the name), one in each major city and then had my itinerary as Deli, Mumbai and Goa. No onward proof of travel was needed or asked for.

Usually outsourced in most Australian locations these days - add A$15 as service charge, so A$95.

No, there is no need to add a service charge, this thread is about applying for an Indian tourist visa in Kuala Lumpur. Admittedly, geography is not my strong suit, but the last time I looked, Kuala Lumpur was not an "Australian location"...

As for outsourcing, OP explains that the visa process has been outsourced in Kuala Lumpur too, and lists the two charges of MYR 48 and MRY 152 and also quotes them in other currencies for the benefit of people like me who are not familiar with the value of the Ringgit.

i just went through all this a couple of days ago too, i was going to explain all you have to do but 7055 was quicker, damn it!

only a couple of things that were a bit different for me.
on the first day, when you submit your aplication, i was there at 5 past 2 and the woman at the counter said that at 2 o'clock they give the last number to queu. they hanged around for me, which was nice of them, but so you know that it's 2 o'clock instead of 3 o'clock to apply aswell
second thing is that my visa cost 160 ringits, not 152. i know it's not big difference, but again so you know.
after applying for visa i went to penang for a few days and went to visa centre in penang to see if i could collect my visa there as i was told i could by the guy at the visa centre in kl.
well, i could but the extra charge for express courier (48 hours) was 180 ringits on top of visa fee and handeling charges. the woman brought the price down first to 150 and finally to 100, but i still thought it was too much and got my visa in kl, as i had to go there anyway for my flight
all this on a spanish passport
by the way, i got to india today!! as alive as always

I would also like to apply for an India visa from Malaysia,
could anyone give me more information on the time it takes?
Is 'a couple of days' indeed the 4-5 days mentioned at the website?

Yes 4-5 days is true, but take into account weekends are exempt as are public holidays, both Indian and Malaysian and Malaysia has a LOT of public holidays.

Penang possible but takes longer, double check this.

I hope things will go smooth for me, but your answer is at least somewhat reassuring!

No problems but if you have trouble in Penang, KL is easily reachable and is relatively close. Plus if you have a week to kill in KL, I recommend a few days in Malacca.

I tried to get a India visa in Beijing and they were very much insisting on a return ticket, but as a traveller for longer time I dont have one. So can anybody tell me do I need a return ticket if I will apply for my visa in Kualu lumpur?

My question is: do I have to pick up the visa on the date the they clearence it, because I want to travel and I would like to pick up the visa a couple of days later. Otherwise I have to stay in Kuala Lumpur. I hope somebody can help me, greetings Maartje

This is a good thread, really helped us out!

We got ours done in 9 days...Filed the application on a Monday, one public holiday that week plus Sat and Sun, the website showed we could drop off our passports for the visa the next Monday, but they didn't post it until that morning, so we didn't notice it until it was too late to go in.

Dropped off the passports and the rest of the fees on Tuesday morning and received them with visas attached Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. A long process, but pretty simple and the staff at the visa center were helpful and friendly.

To get a visa for a US citizen cost around 250MYR plus 53 MYR for the application fee, for an Australian citizen about 170 plus 53 (we paid together, so I'm not completely sure of the breakdown).
