Applying for a new visa before the old one expired (in United States)

I got my tourist visa recently and then my plans changed and I'm not going to be going to India for another (almost) 6 months - which means that my visa will have almost expired. I contacted Travisa and they said that I can just apply for a new visa (when I'm ready) and they will cancel my old one even if it hasn't expired yet. I am wary to trust this because it would be a huge bummer if I planned on it and then was denied a visa. Has anyone else been in the same boat or know of someone who had and who was successful at getting a new visa? To be clear I'm in the US still and haven't (nor will I be until February) left for India yet.

Just apply for a 10 year T visa and be done with. There are people in the forum who are willing to give their first born kitten from the litter just to get one of those 10 year visas

Travisa is correct which considering that they handle this stuff makes sense. The IRS is a govt. agency so it doesn't have to be correct (different standard)..
