Apply for a new visa when already having a valid one?

Is it possible to apply for a new visa if you already have a valid visa in your passport, which one though will expire before the time of your travel; or would you need to wait to apply for a new one until the current one has expired?

This is the issue;

Already been in India and back home these days. Thinking of returning but the visa will not be valid by the time of departure. And, not sure whether there will be sufficient time between the expire of the visa and time of departure.

Will they grant a new visa even though there is already a valid one in the passport?

Yes, they will. They will cancel the old one.
