Have a train ticket to Nepal from Mumbai next monday the 18th so I can extend my visa. But the political/military situation there right now is sounding dire. Heard from some other backpackers who couldn't get across the border into India from Nepal and are stuck there, so getting INTO Nepal must be just as bad? And now this in the news:
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/20...t_11360730.htm Anyone on the front lines care to report in? And if so, how many months is the Indian embassy handing out these days? Thanks!

Yikes! The sheer fact that no one is replying to this thread leaves room for doubt on whether anyone is getting in or out of Nepal via India. Not good...

Not really, I don't think there are exactly droves around here trying to do the same.
More likely just no one has answered so far; you'd only posted your question 24 hours ago, after all. (You'd also have had more chance of an answer by posting it in the Crossing the Border forum. No, please, don't double-post it there, can only frustrate everyone including yourself.)

nb I really don't know about current Nepali developments; note however Xinhua to my best knowledge is pretty much an official Chinese mouthpiece, not exactly my kind of reliable or objective news source.
Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree Forum can be a good resource on current events there: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntre...keywordi d=68 . |

Just for the record, we had no problems getting across the Sonauli border into Nepal (other than the sheer time it took from Gorakhpur (56km = 6 hours!!!), and the horrible roads to Kathmandu, or the several bus accidents we saw along the way). Getting a Nepal visa was quick and easy and the officials were very friendly.
Thanks! India Photography |
