American passport renewal in India

Hi I am an American that is planning on living in India long term. My question is, when my passport is up for renewal do I need to come back to America, or can I renew the passport in India? I have 6 years left, so things could change by then!

You can go to the nearest American embassy and renew your passport.

Are you of Indian descent? Or married to one? Or are hired to work in India? Or are starting a business in India? If neither then you will only be able to get a tourist visa which requires you to leave the India every 180 days. My wife just got a 10 year tourist visa and can visit India anytime.

I do not know whether the US consulate will renew the US passports of those on tourist visas

I renewed mine in 2006 at the US Embassy in Delhi. Turnaround was about a week (they process them in New Hampshire). It didn't even need renewing, but I wanted a fresh 10-year passport before they started issuing the ones with the RFID chips in them. I was on an employment visa at the time, but I don't think that was a qualifying factor...

good, not sure how long to stay in India, but at least I have some safe haven from the US. Mandatory vaccinations scare me more than the rfid. Rfid do not do to well in the microwave.
