90 day visa run
The new tourist visa rule requires you to leave India after 90 days.
Which border crossing you would use by train from South India. Pakistan comes to my mind. Is it possible to watch the Wagan border from Pakistan side a few seconds and return back to India without Pakistani visa? During to old 180 day rule I heard some people walk to Nepal and come back immediately. I just do not know what border crossing would be the most ecological to do that. Any advice for people who like to stay in South India and do not like to travel around too much. |

From south India the easiest would be to fly to Sri Lanka. Cheap to fly and no visa needed for most nationalities.
Have you got your visa yet? Are you sure you have to leave after 90 days? |

It is very necessary to state your nationality when referring to visa rules. Please tell us that, as well as which country you are getting your visa in.

Can't extend a tourist visa beyond 15 days and that with a very good excuse unless an officer takes a liking to you. Try the state capital FRO. What is your nationality as that seems to make a difference..

From a post elsewhere Varma is Finnish I think.
Varma, are you sure that new "long-term" visa replaces the existing one? If not, you could just apply for a regular one. Have you contacted your embassy about it? http://www.indianembassy.fi/ . From what I can see it looks like you can still apply for a regular visa http://www.indianembassy.fi/index.php?id=90 : "Finnish and Estonian passports: 6 months €50 / 1 year €80 / 2-5 years €160 / Transit €12." They're not too clear on what the tourist visa deal is though. Give them a call.

"Long-term visa" (= 5-year tourist visa), 6-month tourist visa, 1-year tourist visa, ... - it doesn't matter what kind of a tourist visa you have, if you're a Finnish citizen in India on a tourist visa, you're allowed to be in India in 90-day periods only. Note that the first day of the 90-day period is your arrival day in India, not the day when your tourist visa was issued. And note that the first day of the 6-month/180-day (for example) period of the visa does begin on the day it is issued. I have checked with the embassy in Helsinki/Finland - called them twice - but certainly it doesn't hurt to check your particular situation with the embassy.
Don't know about being of Indian origin, though... I'm not. ![]() Also about the long-term visa, see http://www.indianembassy.fi/index.php?id=84: --- Tourists wishing to visit India are normally granted short-term tourist visas, effective from the date of issue. Tourist visas are non-extendible and non-convertible. Travel agents who have to visit India frequently may be granted tourist visas for a longer duration. ---

(At least that's my understanding of it; I'm getting myself severely confused now, sorry.) ps More confusing still, both Home Affairs and the Dutch embassy still mention only the old 180-day deal: http://mha.gov.in/fore.htm , http://www.indianembassy.nl/page181000.htm. Could be both are not up to date, but esp. with the former this seems weird to me. The Finnish site doesn't seem to list exact stipulations, at least not in English. I believe you on your phone calls, don't get me wrong; I was just wondering what my own situation might be. Guess I'll find out when the time comes ![]() Last edited by machadinha : Aug 13th, 2007 at 05:01. Reason: merged posts |

Nowhere on the Embassy of India (Finland) website can I find the information that all tourist visas have a 90-day limit! I picked up the information, by chance, from a Finnish travel forum, www.pallontallaajat.net (in Finnish!), and checked with the Embassy myself. I guess the visa will have the information on it!
![]() The embassy also told me that I only need to cross the border, and I can cross the border back to India! I believe that to cross the border, I need a visa - to Nepal, for example - and I've been interested in countries that offer visa at the border / on arrival, for example, Nepal, the Maldives... mmm, the Maldives... (expensive, though, but if I stayed in Male only, hmm...) (except I think there won't be Martinis there...) |
