180 Day Visa & Flights

Hi All,

Yes Kinrara you are correct.
Nonis friend got a one year x visa but this was all they got when they tried to renew their 5 year one.
Next time theyll only get a tourist visa.
Noni is going this week to try and renew her 5 year one and has all the right documentation including Property title deeds, Residency etc.......so what happens to Noni will really tell the tale. We await with baited breath.

AFD we have had this debate on expats havnt we?
To echo what Nick has said...If you have proof of otherwise please let us all know.

PS Kinrara i have never heard of a 1 year tourist visa so cant help you there im afraid.

According the High Commission site, one-year tourist visas are available to people in the travel travel who have to travel to India frequently (IIRC).

So, just as they bent the terms of issue of the X visa ('available to persons of Indian origin') now, perhaps, they've decided to bend the terms of the 1-yr tourist visa.

Thanks for your replies. I think we were given a 1 year tourist visa because they basically felt sorry that they couldn´t give us an X visa, so they issued us a 1 year tourist stamped 180 days max instead, who knows what we will get when we go again in August, will keep you posted. We were not the only ones given a 1 year tourist, several of our friends were also given this type of visa who have also "so called purchased in Goa".

Hi Kinrara,

If your one year visa is stamped 180days max, then where do you go to renew it? Does this still mean you have to leave Goa after 6 months and renew back in UK?
Also if its stamped 180 days max then this will stop you achieving residency and if you already have residency does this mean you will lose residency privilages?

180 days max means leaving and re-entering so as not to spend more than 180 contiguous days in India. The visa won't expire, though until the full 12 months from issue. All that is needed is an exit and entry.

It certainly looks as if it is partly aimed at ensuring that people do not qualify for residency

You just have to leave India and go to Nepal or Thailand or anywhere else for a day or two and then you can come back on the same visa. You don't "renew" it. A tourist visa can not be renewed.

Hi All

Yes, Nick & GoanCanuck you are quite right you have to cross the border after the 180 days be stamped out and then back in, no need to apply for new visa on a 1 year tourist. But you can´t get residency or any other privillages on this type of visa! This is what we were given last year, don´t know what we will get when we go again in August! Hoping that we will get another 1year tourist, but more likely to be a 6 months tourist visa. We want to stay in Goa for at least 8 months so it means applying for a new visa in Sri Lanka/Thailand etc.

Hi Kinrara, Nick and all,

Would definately agree with Nick about it being aimed at preventing residency rights.
Quite clever of them actually as this will further prevent foreigners purchasing and registering property 'legally' which i guess is the whole idea.

one advocate in Goa told me quite emphatically that an 'X' visa *is* a tourist visa but allowing stays of >182 days and potentially/ possibly eXtensible.

An official at the Reserve bank of India once told me all sorts of crap about his own country's immigration and visa rules too...

But I didn't bother to pass it on.
