10 year visa question

I'm applying for a 10 year visa. It looks as if there is nothing extra needed then my required 2 pictures and the normal visa form filled out. I want to double check because the last thing I want is to send it there and have to spend more money because it is filled out wrong!!

ps... I got my passport in the mail last night (yes I worry too much!) Thank you for the info though!!

Take your previous passport with you. I went to get a 5 year visa for myself a few weeks ago in the UK. They told me to come and collect it in a few hours.

When I went back they asked me to bring my previous passport and my fathers passport. Perhaps they tought I was an ISI agent as I had a Pakistan visa in my passport.

So I had to repeat the trip again the next day. This time they were very efficient and gave me my passport with 5 year visa back within 2.5 hours.

Yes, you're all set. I assume you know the 10 year visa for US passport holders is more expensive than the 6 month or 5 year visa, right? I got mine a two years ago and will be using it for the fourth time soon. You save money AND pages in your passport.

The previous poster's advice about bringing (or mailing in) your old passport with the new one is interesting. I didn't have to do that. Their advice is good, but may be specific to the UK. I don't know!

Just got my 10-year visa. That's all you need plus the fee in the form of a cashier's check or money order.

Probably true and only specific to UK. There are lots of printed signs at Indian High Commissioners in Birmingham stating that they reserve the right to inspect previous passports etc. Shame they do not mention it on the visa form.

Just a note on 10 year tourist visas. I have one from America. I am studying Tibetan in Darjeeling for 9 months. I went into the Foreign Registration Office when I first got here in March and then went again in August to see about getting an extension. It was SO easy! Five photos and about an hour later, I had permission to stay here until December. Very cool.

However, people in my class who only had a regular 6 month tourist visa could not get the same. But, another American who also had a 10 year couldn't get it either. Go figure.

Also, I've no idea if this would work in other cities, with other people, doing other things. I just wanted you to know that it was possible.

loki,

The requirements are clearly listed on the Checklist (Page 5 of the passport) form http://www.indianconsulate-sf.org/visa/visaform.pdf

if you are not a US citizen or Resident, you have to fill out another form http://www.indianconsulate-sf.org/vi..._ref_sheet.pdf

I would advise that you keep a photocopy of your passport and a send your original passport by Registered mail (with receipt confirmation) -- just in case the Indian consulate "loses" your passport..

No British citizens can't get a five year visa unless they are traveling frequently for business, attending a Yoga/meditation school, studying or of Indian origin!!

Agreed, I do not see why they do not allow British Citizens to have a 10 year visa.

It really is annoying isn't it that we can't get more than 6 mths, I remember going to Nepal about 10 years ago and hanging around the embassy for days to get a return visa to India. Word back then was to bribe the official so I slipped some cash in my passport which was a fair bit from what I remember. I got a 6 month visa luckily, however a lady after me did exactly the same and the same official screamed at her to not try and corrupt him & refused to give her a visa back to India, poor lady was devastated

Wonder how easy it is to blag the studying yoga/meditation one? anyone got experience?

Israelis get a a one year visa
Boo hoo
Must be something to do with our colonial past hahaha
Right thats it ...give us 10 year visas or we take back the railways!!!!!
You can keep the mind blowing bureaucracy though

GIVE US 10 YEAR VISAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry just needed to get that off my chest

Actually I think we make it hard for Indians to enter Britain so they are less flexible with us which is fair enough really

It may be hard for Indians to enter the UK but there are reasons behind that, also Indians can get 1,2,5 and10 year visa for the UK if they impress the ECO enough and deposit the appropriate fee.

The cost and length of visas are normally reciprocal between countries. I'm very surprised that you can't get longer visas if Indians can get them for the UK.

Perhaps you could start a letter-writing campaign to the Indian Embassy in London?
