10 Year Visa for Americans

regarding the 10 year visa - here is an update as to a number of questions and potential issues ive seen on this board over the brief time ive been visiting.

first -wherever you live find the link to VISA CAMP. these are day trip the embassy and consulates make to indian communities for processing visas SAME DAY. they may be coming to a town near you!

1. my application was made directly to the embassy. i believe this may have 'slowed' the visas return by 1-2 days -possibly.

2. the full turn around including half days and weekends was 6 days. quite prompt. excluding day of arrival (am) and weekend. three full business days for processing. i inclosed postpaid usps overnight envelope (13.xx). Emb/Consulate chgs 15.00.

3. i had visited india prior, i did not list an indian contact, i did list a us contact. i am unemployed and listed myself as travel consultant/broker. i listed a bunch of non threatening jibberish as to my purpose (ie not a journalist, not going to manali for six mos....rather: a bunch of religious sites and meditation centers).

4. below/attached is the addendum regarding stay > no need to register ...stay 180 days...

============================== ===============
EMBASSY: http://www.indianembassy.org/consular/index.htm

TOURIST VISA: Valid for 6 months to 10 years. Ten (10) year visa is available only to US citizens under a bilateral arrangement. Irrespective of the duration of validity of visa, on each visit maximum period of stay in India is limited to 6 months (180 days). Multiple entry visas are given.

Tourist/Business Visa – (for US Nationals only) valid for over 5 years and up to 10 years $ 150 N/A

hoe difficult is it to get the 10 year visa? I had to go through hell to get another 3 month visa, which the embassy in rome did not want to grant me as I had just retruned.

Easy as pie for me but I just sent my passport for renewal so I get to send for a transfer of the visa, extra money and hassle. Something to keep in mind. While my mother in law lived it made good sense to have it available for a rush trip. Now..
